Mahi-mahi anyone?
Dad caught this big boy off Big Pine Key, FL today. Over 30lbs. Check out the colors of the pectoral fin in the second photo.

What?!?!

That's a beautiful and tasty fish. How long to land it? What's the plan for it?
When I was in the Navy, we were patrolling around Panama and we would have designated Fishing days. My co worker caught one that was probably a little smaller than your Dad's. We cleaned it and the Chef cooked it the next day. We shared all of it. Some was Blackened, too. Good stuff. Congrats!! ![]()

A guy at work has an old college friend who runs charters in south Florida. He was showing pictures of Mahi-mahi last week that were pretty spectacular.
He claimed that they grow so fast that there's essentially no limit - that sounded odd to me. I'd love to go after them one day. |

I caught a 42 pounder near Rancho Buena Vista on the Sea Of Cortez. Put up a great fight and made excellent Ceviche'. Do they call them Mahi Mahi, Dorado or Dolphin in Florida?

That is one nice bull (male) mahi your dad caught, and they are delicious.
They are schooling fish. So the tip is that if you hook one and leave it in the water the rest of the clan will stick around. I have never been able to do this myself. Once one is on the line I like to get into the boat. But friends have left the first mahi in the water. Then start casting with light tackle and hook up to others in the group. Mahi being quite acrobatic fish this can be quite the show with a couple hooked up at a time on light tackle Cheers Richard |

I love going to Rancho Buena Vista. BIG "Dodo's" down there. At RBV you can catch a wahoo, yellowfin, dorado, pacific amberjack, and a sailfish all in the same day. Awesome place.

Great fish to catch, and to eat. Been lucky enough to have been getting them up in my area.

Thanks. When I saw the photo I thought, "That looks like the dolphin fish we used to catch," and I was going to ask what the difference was. Their colors are beautiful when they first come out of the water.

You just can't beat fresh caught Mahi-Mahi! I caught a smaller one off of Kapaa on Kauai a few years ago. They make the best fish burgers..yum!..heading there again in early April!

A tip for anyone going charter fishing in Hawaii, the fish belongs to the boat unless otherwise agreed to. Got to discuss it at the time of booking to make sure you get some fish to take with you.
Funny I know. Comes from when charterers would come to the islands in slow transport with no way to get the fish home in good shape. This the profit on some boats for the crew. So got to work it out up front. I once was crewing on a boat in kona. Went out with one guest aboard. Had all four lines go down at once. We landed three large ahi. 600lbs of prime fish. Would have really cut the value of one to cut it. So the captain offered the guest a dinner out on him to keep the fish intact. Big fun fighting those fish at one time. The untended one got off. Cheers Richard |
