What songs are WAY OVER PLAYED?

In a recent post about creating a mix tape for driving, another person stated
Quote:
If I hear one more GD Eagles, Fleetwood Mac or Steve Miller tune I may firebomb the radio station. One more thing.... Both The Stones and Zeppelin had more than three GD songs!
It got me thinking about classic songs (lets just say pre 1985) that I used to enjoy that were played sooo much I would be happy to never hear them again.

Putting aside musical preference, here's some low hanging fruit:
Stairway to Heaven - Zeppelin (any guitarist my age had to learn how to play it)
Freebird - Skynard
Aqualung - Tull (yeah, I know its a great song but give it a rest)
Hotel California - Eagles (Never really a fav of mine)
Hey Jude - Beatles (I was sick of it the first month it came out and yes I am that old)
Truckin - Uncle Jerry (Uncle Jerry is still talking to me but that song is the only one that ever got any real commercial success and is way overplayed).

So, bring it on. What song makes you want to turn OFF the radio?

I live in a rural area and the available radio stations lack, shall we say, imagination. It is so ridiculous I had to get sat radio in my truck.

In the summer, we mow quite a bit and to break the monotony I have hearing protection headphones with FM radio built in. Unfortunately the oldies station that comes in the best has a song rotation of maybe 20 songs, all pivoting around "Smoke on the Water".

I'd rather listen to the 1-800-Cars-For-Kids jingle.

Tom Petty; "American Girl", You Don't Know How It Feels", "Last Dance With Mary Jane".

Aerosmith; "Dream On", "Sweet Emotion", or anything they've done in the last 20 years.

Zeppelin; "Stairway", "Fool In The Rain", "The Ocean", Kashmir", "Whole Lotta Repeat"...

Eagles, yep... Molly Hatchet, BTO, Skynnard, Heart, Steve Miller Band,...

Classic rock has been officially played the hell out. It has certifiably jumped the shark. It is worn down... You can see the cords hangin' out already!!

I could continue, but I don't want any of those songs stuck in my head. I stopped listening to comm. radio because of the repetition, and content. I hear that satellite radio is kinda like that too, with the added insults of charging a subscription, and airing paid advertisements in their programming.

Pandora. Period.

Squeeze - Tempted.

I really don't ever need to hear that song again. Can't figure why anyone's ever heard it in the first place.

Sunshine by John Denver in the 70s. Just thinking about that song makes my skin crawl.

Gotta disagree with you on that one. That's one of the greats.

I'm a rabid Pink Floyd fan, but if I never hear "Money" again, it will be too soon!

I guess we are lucky to have a good rock station here. 101.5 The Banana.

They play new bands and only throw a few classics once in a while. I actually asked the PD about the old stuff last summer at an event. He told me they were just trying to mix things up a little. I suggested he made a bad decision as the station across town plays the classic stuff.

Mony, Mony is one song I could not hear again and be cool with it. That comes from having to play it a bazillion times when doing covers in my band. Chicks dig it but still......

And Tempted is a great song by an under rated band for sure.

After a 15 year or greater hiatus from listening to the local radio stations, I recently turned back on WDVE. , our local classic/rock station. It is like Iikr i never missed a beat. Right back to 1988/with a few new crappy nickleback songs thrown in the mix now. And if that is not enough, you get to hear it over, and over, and over throughout day.
My favorite is when people call in and request songs that will be played 5 times a day anyhow. Seems to me like commercial radio is long overdue for a complete overhaul.

Every song played at NFL and Baseball games.
Current and classic tunes.
That list is never ending.

You owe it to yourself to listen to DSOTM on vinyl on a good stereo - make sure your mind is clear and you have time to listen... ... ... when "Money" comes up I'll wager you rethink your opinion. It's like the rug in"The Big Lebowski" - it just ties the whole thing together.....

This is a great thread! As the supplier of the original thoughts about The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac etc I think this will be a fun thread. Maybe even a little cathartic.

"Despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage" or whatever the hell the name of it is from a few years ago. Stupid song to start with - annoyingly repetitious, like the band could only come up with one angry lyric and a couple of power chords. Totally untalented, "I'm-seventeen-and-I-hate-my-father" angst-filled bull****. Add to it the fact it was overplayed for MONTHS and you'll understand why even to this day I can't listen to it. I don't listen to local radio stations anyway (they all suck IMHO), only NPR on occasion, or my iPod.

Ok I feel better now. Ahh.

The first time I really noticed the play list as a kid was:

Rod Stewart, I think the title is "Maggie May"

Over and over they played it. I grew to dislike play lists that summer.

There are a few. but like TV, Radio has become a beating. But I have a question. Do radio stations pay something for the right to play a song? Some songs being cheaper than others, and only some songs are bought from each artist? Might that not explain why these bad songs are played as often as the good ones., and why some groups with many great songs songs only get a few played on the station.

If I have to fill 5 minutes of time, will I pay $5 for Jim Croce or $50 for a Beatles tune?

Bingo! I just can't stand Classic Rock radio anymore. Every song has just flat out been played into the ground.

More Than a Feeling- Boston...I don't think that one was mentioned. But just about any song mentioned in this thread makes me want to heave when I hear it.
