I wondered as well, about 1.5 seconds worth of google told me that being catfished is "Having a fake facebook profile, images and avatar in order to lure people to have a romantic feelings."

So, are you saying that your wife is being used to create the fake profiles, ie using her pics, etc...?

I assume you are not saying that she is falling for fakers or is creating the fake pages to lure folks in.

I doubt it's illegal unless "they" do something illegal with the profile.

I'm not sure that means what you think it means (to steal the line) unless overweight, unattractive guys are lying to her about their looks to build up an online relationship...
Urban Dictionary: catfish

what happens eventually is they build a relationship and when they think they have someone "hooked" then comes the request for money due to hardship, they are always widowed men with one child, horrible grammar, very easy to spot, I think she wants to "catfish" this guy and then call him out, it happened once before and she threatened to call the authorities.

Why would you friend anyone on FB that you don't know in real life?

Not against the law, not sure why your wife is getting involved, is she a FB junky or failing to practice safe social networking? Just unfriend/block everyone who gives off a fishy odor.

She does not friend these Catfishers, they appear out of thin air.

She needs to edit her privacy settings on FB. You can only see my stuff if you are a friend of mine. Sounds like she has everything set to "public".

I (still) see ZERO upside to having a FB account and lots of potential downside. Not a member and likely won't ever be.

Having a FB account gives me the opportunity to shake my head in disgust at the way some people socialize. I respond or post something about once a week or less, and don't even look at it everyday. Where some idiots run into trouble is having all the updates go directly to thier phones, so it's virtually impossible to talk in person to these people because, they are fiddling with thier device.

We went camping with 2 other couples and all of our kids, and I made the comment that I was the only one sitting around the campfire that night who didn't have a LCD glow on my face....how sad !

This.

Couple that with the unnecessary, worthless updates for the sake of making noise so other people can like/comment about it.

Examples of unnecessary updates:
- Signing off for the night with some "catchy phrase" EVERY SINGLE DAY. I really don't care when you do to bed.
- Pictures of your meal. Who cares? In a couple of hours, that substance will only be a pile of stinkin' poo. Why not post a pic of that?
- Complaining about anything and everything. Lately, it's been "It is snowing. And they didn't call school off - so now I have to drive my little Johnny to school in this dangerous weather. If you are behind me, too bad - I drive slow in the snow! Wish me luck!!" Followed by "Just got back from dropping off little Johnny at school in this snow. I think the guy behind me has a broken horn, 'cause it was going off for long times..."
- Selfies. Especially the ones that are out of focus, and only half of the person's face is in the picture.
- The "I can't believe what happens next" click-bait links.

Look, I'm all for social media - but if you are going to post - post something that has relevance or meaning. Pictures from your recent vacation, updates on how your newborn is doing, good news or bad news about your family or friends. BUT KEEP YOUR MUNDANE,MISERABLE PATHETIC LIFE TO YOURSELF! I have my own mundane, miserable, pathetic life to focus on - what make anyone think I am interested in their life.

As for catfishing? As stated above - check your privacy settings...

Now, if you'll pardon me, this miserable pathetic soul has to get ready to drive home in the snow again...

I like it to let everyone know what a great cup of coffee I just had, how much I love or hate life, hook up with old girl friends, send money to strangers and play FarmVille.

Good question. For me, I'm on the Exec board of a fraternal organization with 20,000 members in 26 countries.....I have FB friends (over 1,500) where I don't know what country they live in or what language they are posting in......

I never post more than once a week. Even when traveling out of the country, I pick 5 or 6 of my fav photos for the week and put it all in one post.......Never a Selfie....
I unfriend those that continually post stupid BS or tag me when I don't want to be tagged....

I love FB, but keep my profile viewable to friends only and don't try to friend everyone I meet. It's great for musician networking and keeping up with who's playing when and where. I've gotten a free trip to Germany out it when a long lost college buddy came out of the woodwork and gifted me 50k miles on United. I've reconnected with long lost friends I'd have never otherwise found. Just yesterday a buddy posted a photo of his Randy Rhoads-autographed Blizzard of Ozz album with a great story behind it. I love it, but don't live for it.

BTW, I won't connect with anyone on LinkedIn I don't know in person or haven't done business with. But it has been invaluable for my work.
