Is this another one of your "in the cosmic scheme of things" sort of questions, or are there some specific criteria? Because the lesbian golden retriever owner criteria is much different than the hipster active lifestyle criteria.

We had to get rid of my wife's new 2013 (auto) Forester because it used to stall in intersections.
Idle at a red light, start and as the revs rose, stall half way through the intersection.
Scared my wife a few pounds lighter a couple of times.
Long and sordid tale trying to get it sorted, ended up dumping it at a big loss.

Have to keep it open ended... the specifics would mire it down. The research (albeit limited) that I have done compared to what I liked narrowed it down to these two. I shall use one of these like pretty much the rest of America does. Nothing out of the ordinary.

Good lord, what kind of requirements narrowed it down to these two heaps?

I have not driven the Q3 but I have had the Forrester as a rental. What a POS. That transmission would drive me insane. Like a rubber band between you and the car. Seemed to kill power (in favor of mileage?) too.

The Q3 would plain scare me due to reliability concerns. But I don't know their recent rep and statistics. I guess knowing less about the Q3 I'd lean that direction.

You'll never catch me in a compact SUV.

Ford Escape...

Same size, just as nice inside, but cheaper, and more support network. Go drive the new escape and try not to love it. I love mine still after 10k miles

My wife bought a 2011 Subaru Outback. She bought the 4 cylinder. It has been extremely reliable and is just outright fantastic in the snow. On several trips, we've averaged 35 MPG. Seeing how this is a drivers forum, I should point out it, it's not a drivers vehicle. It drives like an appliance, but wife doesn't care.

Then with no criteria to compare whatsoever I would choose the Q3, as this is a driving enthusiast forum. The Subaru is a nice appliance that it good in the snow, the Audi will be more on the fun end of the equation, and be much nicer inside.

Have not driven a Q3. Have driven my neighbour's Forester. Pretty boring, seems roomy inside. If buying new I would take a flyer on the Audi. You can get a used Lexus RX350 for the price of a new Forester.

Yes as mentioned above some women just want reliable transportation. In which case the Forester would be the one. If it was my wife I would be talking her into the Audi.New for sure...

This is a great idea but I know the OP won't bother looking into it because a Hyundai is "below him" (much like driving a Honda or Toyota was unacceptable our parents).

My brother and boss drive Subaru's and love them.

I have the 2015 Forester XT Turbo. Fast as hell and fun to drive. Looks cool too but it does only get 26 mpg on supreme. Nice interior and great visibility. It was Motor Trends compact SUV of the year and was top pick by Consumer Reports.

Beneath me? Oh my goodness do we have to sit and have a beer!!!

I have a Honda Pilot. I was actually thinking of a Santa Fe - rented one a few years back and really liked it but rented one this year and it didn't seem to have advanced any.

And then a Toyota Corolla which ended its life with over 300k on it. I drove it its last summer - all summer in low and didn't know it. I'm sure it didn't help matters.
