996 TT....Its Baaaaaaackkkk....hmmm
This was bought in 48 hrs a few weeks ago now its for sale again. Perhaps the funding fell through? Perhaps there was buyers remorse? I'm actually intrigued and it was a tip I would fly out there to check it out...

Most likely the funding didn't materialize. This has happened a few times recently (local classic cars)
It seems people get all excited before doing their home work. ![]() If you're in the market you should make the effort and go and this in person. (especially considering the recent "I got ripped off" thread in the 911 forum)

There's a clue in the write up: Savannah Beige interior with dark headliner - BZZZZZZT
Dark carpet BZZZZZZT Something's not kosher. Interiors of these cars are monochromatic. I'd be looking closely at the car (some of the reflections look like low quality respray). I've had a Lapis Blue Porsche, and it's a great color. 80K miles on one of these is not high miles. Price is very tempting. But if there were ever a car needing careful PPI... this is it. I would trust my factory 996-trained mechanic's assessment, and few others' (I write this in case an interested party reads this thread) Oh, and I concur on funding. Many banks consider all 2002 cars as high risk collateral.

I've had several people click "buy it now" on EBay, swear that they have cash, then write me several days later because they couldn't get financing. Which all means I have to spend $50 to repost my ad.

It's only 60 miles away so I could take a look at it if you want.

Actually techweenie that's not true, I've had 996s with contrasting interiors, especially carpet and headliner. These are true factory options, not aftermarket.

It may well have been an option. I've been lucky enough to never have seen one ordered that way, and certainly not with a contrasting headliner. But thanks for the correction. Someone ordered mine with the "large burl wood" option, so there's no accounting for taste,

If that's the subject car, it's not Savannah Beige. That's called Natural Brown Leather and the carpet matches (insert risque joke). It's just the headliner that seems wrong.

More my style:

They buyer declined because he felt it was represented as having had the clutch replaced. It wss not. It likely needs a new clutch. I spoke with the seller.

After 80K miles I would expect a minimum of one clutch and it wouldn't be unusual for it to have had 2. They are torque monsters and hard on clutches. If someone nursed 80K out of their 996 Turbo clutch, I would expect the car was very conservatively driven.
They have a 'tattletaile' provision tracking level 1 and level 2 over-revs. That's an important part of any PPI. But there's a guy over on Rennlist who had (as of last Fall) 310K miles on his 996 Turbo without splitting the case. They are tough beasts. It's just that a clutch, brakes, etc. are all pricey to do.

Honestly at that price you'd have to be tempted.
I think we forget the accolades these cars had when new. Comments like "Best Drivers Car Ever" were common. Whatever it needed it would still be a very cheap true super car. Truly in the 1% performance wise. And that 964 based engine! ![]() At some point these had a special LED lit interior. I remember reading about it but I'm not sure what that actually means. Are they all Disco inside?

I'll bite: So what does a 996tt clutch run?
The car's not too far awY from me and I dig the colors, actually. The underfrunk options sticker lists a few interior items, so the two-tone interior may very well be stock. Last edited by Noah930; 04-19-2015 at 08:54 PM.. |

![]() The hood looks suspicious, too. Could that just be black floor mats in there?

I wondered also so I looked it up and found threads that said between $3,000 and $4,000.
