Looks like they are trading for about MSRP. Not bad for a two year old car, but it's not a Ford GT. Like all new cars they will eventually depreciate. Even the legendary E30 M3 was a $10k car for a while. The 997TT is about half of MSRP and won't go too much lower. The 996TT has been rock solid for the last few years, I doubt they get any cheaper.

But hey, it's your money, if you love it, buy it. But $60k is nutty.

On the 997TT the second and third owners are enthusiasts that want to drive the wheels off the car, so a ragtop isn't good. If you go to the track, many organizations will want you to have a roll bar ...

I would love a 997TT and would be torn in the same way. I probably would fill my ragtop needs in a tamer car, I think.

I don't want a cab at all. I don't really think 997tt can be had for sub 60, at least not without some hair on it. I have seen a few 997-S 2009-10 priced in the 50s. I won't mess with a pre 2009 911 with the ims issue. Yes, I know it probably affects less than 1%. But I'm not a lucky guy.

From what I've seen, it's possible to get a forward facing kid seat in a 911. Showed my 3 year old son an orient-red 996tt on rennlist for sale. He said "it's a Porsche". He also said he likes yellow better.

Speed yellow looks killer on a 996. It definitely would be wise to buy a cherry 996 over a hairy 997. With the money you save, you can get it to the same performance level, if so inclined.

Then you don't want to hear about the 39K-mile Speed Yellow 996tt that went for $37K on Rennlist 3 or 4 weeks ago. If it's any consolation, it was located in British Colombia or something like that, so about as far away from you in Miami as could possibly be.

I found that searching for M1 turns up more cars than 1M, I am sure you know this ...

Not a big fan of white on most cars (except daily drivers) but the 1M looks nice. Makes it look a little less crazy.

Man I hate tacky car dealerships that don't post a price. Drives me insane. If it is REALLY priced at wholesale then it should be about $50k.

There has been an orange one for sale in New Orleans for awhile priced at 49k. Dealer initially put up pics of it where it was absolutely filthy. The interior was comically dirty. Then I also found out another forum member had looked into it, figured out who the previous owner was, and got pics from the previous owner showing damage to the chin that has been repaired. It seems that unless you can get info from the PO you'll never know a car's history. (Until paying $$ for a PPI). I don't get how you can buy cars at auction without having the ability to inspect extensively.

That white one in SF has been on autotrader for awhile at 54k. The aftermarket headlights give me pause, and I'm not crazy about the white.

I only buy cars at auction with 3rd party inspection reports, which most of the more expensive ones have. Any paintwork is noted by panel, any structural repairs are noted, tire tread depth is noted by tire, mechanical condition, any warning lights, interior wear or damage, interior odor, vehicle equipment, any aftermarket equipment, etc. All of this is, btw, far more comprehensive than a dealership PPI. I've bought a lot of high end cars at auction and never been surprised.

Interesting. Sometime I'd love to pick your brain and learn about what you do- frankly it seems like a pretty cool job. If you were local I'd bring you scotch and ply information from you that way.

How do 3rd party inspections for auctions work- is it dome on-site at the auction house? Do they actually get to put it on a lift and/or test drive it?

It's a bit of a long trip for that scotch.

They are facilitated by the auction, but are sometimes done at the selling dealership location for cars with a "buy it now" type price. Not every car on the online wholesale auctions are actually going through a live auction, dealers also list inventory there at wholesale prior to actually taking the car to the auction. They do a very comprehensive visual inspection but a basic mechanical one, essentially they tell you if the engine starts and the car runs and drives. They also note visual issues like oil leaks. There is also an arbitration process, where if you buy a car that has a serious undisclosed issue (structural repair, major mechanical issue, title issue, etc) then the auction facilitates a financial settlement for the buyer. Like I said, I've bought some higher end cars (Porsches, AMG Mercedes, GT500, Roush) and never had any real issues.

If you strike out locally let me know, I do flat rate locating and can get you a better car than those posted for quite a bit less money.

White with carbon fiber roof, red/black interior, manual transmission, navigation, adaptive xenon lights, etc. Really nice looking car, wholesale book is $46,900. I can't fathom buying a 1M over a V8 M3.

A quick search of 2013 shows nationwide pricing on Autotrader going anywhere from low 50s (and that's for CPO surprisingly with sub 10k miles) up to $78k for a Lime-Rock edition. M3s just experience precipitous depreciation for the first couple of years. Its really staggering. So that wholesale pricing sounds about right.

Any idea if that M3 includes the competition package? From what I've learned (at one point I was considering M3s), the competition pkg is must have. The white with red interior is a killer color combo for sure.

I get why a lot of people don't dig on the 1M- its kind of an oddball, and that's part of its allure to me. One thing is for sure though- the v8 M3 engine sound is just simply amazing. If I ever got one the first thing I would do is get an open exhaust for that badboy and let it sing.

Nope, no competition package on this one. M3s are relatively common at auction and I've seen quite a few that have it.

It's not that I dislike the 1M, actually I think they are very cool cars. My argument is similar to George, I think they are at least $10k too expensive. There's a lot of stuff that I would rather have for $50k+......like a V8 M3 or any number of Porsches. But I'd happily drive one, they look like fun.

There's a 2011 1M that just popped up with 41k, wholesale $48,700. Rated at 4.6/5 which is good, but it does show prior paintwork on the hood. White over black with orange stitching, nav and the usual goodies.

I like the idea that 1Ms originally MSRPd at about $50 (prior to some of the crazy markups that happened) and now 3 years later go for the same or more. Whereas a 2011 M3 that went for $78k is lucky to go in the 40s. That's part of it as well.

One other factor for me is that I have to have a back seat for kiddies. Otherwise there would be a Corvette in my driveway right now. You can buy a sick Corvette for that kind of money.

As for that 1M you mentioned, white is my least favorite of the three colors, and with paintwork and 41k miles that is actually a bit too high IMO. My ideal 1M would be Orange with manual seats, HK stereo and bluetooth. There was one local to me, but by the time I sold my E30 and got myself truly engaged someone else snatched it up for about $53k with 17k miles. Only flaw was some scrapes on the underside of the chin, which is virtually unavoidable.

I just recently engaged another seller and through a cursory internet search discovered that there was once again a TON of shadiness going on. This seems like it is going to be a long journey.

One other thing I hadn't thought of when considering a 996TT- if I decide to put some debt on it, on an older car like that the rate will be considerably higher.
