Audi creating diesel from CO2 and H2O?

Interesting read....though it will be more interesting to see if it comes to fruition.

Audi just created diesel fuel from air and water

They for sure need to figure out how to make more than 42 gallons per day to compete with regular gas though!

I think its just the Fisher-Tropesch process, like 1925.

Short of having an excess of geothermal or thorium nuke heat, I'm not sure how awesome this is...Its very energy intensive electrochemistry.

Interesting

I wonder how much electricity it takes. Blue crude, I like that, has a nice ring to it.

Not sure about that, BUT Henry Ford did create the BBQ Briquette industry and modern car/tent camping.

The amount of energy used to create the fuel will be anywhere from more to much, much more than will be received burning the fuel. Would be more efficient to use the energy used to create the fuel to do what you wanted the diesel to do.

It's hard to use tidal/geothermal/wind energy for locomotion. It has to be stored in a retrievable format... either a battery or converted to a solid fuel. I think of this blue crude as a biochemical battery of sorts even if it isn't necessarily an electrical charge measured like a lithium battery. The storage format is such that existing technologies can use it... makes perfect sense and doesn't require new consumption hardware like buying an entirely new vehicle to use the stored energy.
