No Pelican for you!

Seems like Pelican has suddenly been blocked at work by our firewall. Comes up as a "suspicious, Alternative, automotive/ newsgroup".

I always knew there was something evil about this place!

If my wife knew how much time I spent here she would probably have it blocked as well.

But then again, it's cheaper than hookers and blow!

I noticed it finally got blocked at work last week as well.

I suspect your work uses bluecoat proxies. Blue Coat categorizes websites. If a company uses Blue Coat proxies, they get the categorization from BC, and will probably have already had a set of block and allow rules created. I suspect Pelican Parts just got categorized.

You can check Blue Coat's website categorizations here.

Well, a lot of the characters here are suspicious, many prefer alternative this, alternative that, but not sure why an automotive newsgroup is suspect.

the forums don't appear to be on a name based virtual host, so direct by IP address should work

I just demanded that our IT Director whitelist Pelican and if he didn't I was going to punch him and take away his lunch.

I'm guessing the suspicious part comes from the PARF side of things as well as the legs thread, the boobs thread, the i just cut my sack thread, not to mention the slap, slap. slap that cratch thread....

Bah, the company is doing it wrong. If there is something on the Internet that folks need to get to, then block everything and whitelist what you need. Have a quick way to get new sites whitelisted. If folks don't need internet for job stuff, then why have access at all?

My company's Internet settings blocks anything that might have the slightest possibility of being porn. I've done searches that were blocked because a fragment of a search term contained the letters "a s s" together, like "assumption"

The website RacingJunk.com is also blocked, presumably because junk is a slang term for genitalia.

My kids' have WiFi at school, with all sites teenage girls may be actually interested in.....facebook, etc.......blocked.
This has resulted in an Arm's Race whereby as soon as a site is blocked, the girls take it as a personal challenge to get around the block. If the ASD (Australian Signals Directorate, our version of the NSA) ever did a recruitment drive through that school no computer anywhere would ever be safe again.

P.S. Boastful father alert: My kid got the highest final year grades in ITS (Information Technology Studies) at that school in 12 years. She's topped her school, we're waiting to hear if she topped the State. But of course, she never did any of the hacking.

Yea, the school is not just fighting one kid, they are fighting against the combined talent of an entire planet of hackers and crackers.

When I was in school the WiFi was so well protected it did not yet exist. Of course we did not have a computer to use it with anyway. We were happy to get to use an electric typewriter.

Ours does pretty well as a filter. Though some pictures don't show up when linked to other sites as those sites are "questionable".

Glen, we had to use a hammer, chisel and a slab of rock.

Can you guys get Pelican at work now? Looking for some feedback here. Or praise would be fine.

Bluecoat updated their evaluation of Pelican on the same day I contacted them.

The company I work at got the update immediately. So I was unblocked on the same day.

But Bluecoat states that some companies don't update every day. So you may have to wait a while for it to turn on for you.
