You should have gotten a Zune. Now there's a product that will continue to be supported for years to come...

In all seriousness, have you tried the hard reboot? Didn't see that mentioned above...

I understand your point about the interface.

OTOH I have been using a portable 500GB HDD with integrated Wifi in the car for some time now.
The kids love it!

Let me suggest something crazy here. Take it to the Apple store and let them look at it. Best case is they bring it back from the dead, worst case is they offer to send it out for a fee to be fixed. Either way you get your Ipod back. Can't hurt?

Instead of Fing Apple. Why don't you open it and try to fix it. It is just a thing. Maybe a solder came lose on the battery.

It's 6 years old. In electronic years that's like 100. Jeez!

Yes, either it gets fixed, or you get to say 'eff you' right to Apple....

I'm more disappointed with the stability of the sw releases of both Mac OSX as well as IOS. Both now crash on a regular basis. This is a first for me and it's happening with regularity now.

And everyone including 5th graders have iPhones. Don't want to feel like a lemming, so back to Android. Might as well spread the wealth.

Hey, seriously, I have an old Milwaukee Corded Drill that I sent back to Milwaukee and the overhauled it. Did you consider doing that? Those old US made corded drills are the best.

I'm on the latest iOS and Mac OS with no stability issues.

Can't say what to do w/ iOS, but for Mac OS you should check if enough RAM, repair permissions, reset PRAM.

Thanks. Yes, that's the first thing I tried. Well, maybe the second. Unfortunately this thing is 100% non-responsive.

And...that is why you don't leave electronics in a car in AZ. This thing has been babied and looks brand new. But from the sound of it, that's probably the reason it has lasted so long.

Side note--my wife used to work for GM. One of the tests they ran out here was to leave the car in the sun for 2 hours, get in, leave the windows up, start the car, and see how long it took to cool down to a certain interior temp at idle.

Thanks. There's one nearby that I've been to in the past, they're just good customers of iFixit -- where it looks like $99 for a "logic" (mother) board and "Very Difficult" installation. So I'd guess at least $200...sigh.

Much appreciated but not needed...yet. I keep everything on my iMac (now on its 2nd HD), backed up to RAID.

How old was it?
Have you taken it into an Apple Store to ask about repairs?

My kid's iPod nano home button died 2 months out of warranty, they gave her a new one.
My iPhone 4 battery died after over 4 years, replaced by Apple for AUS$90.

I have no issues with their after sales service.

A long tiime ago I bought an IBM-based 486 computer and it has gotten better and faster the older it gets (because it's possible to UPGRADE them), and now they call it super-blue!

I presume you have never attempted to open an apple product.

I have HP computers here at work dated 1999 still running...

But I guess for an apple product 6 years is a good run

FWIW we had some old apples that booted to floppy still running when I started here.

Maybe it isn't an apple Vs PC thing but just planed obsolescence.

I open Apple products all the time.

No more difficult, and usually less, than any other manufacturer.
