How would you repair this damage to my Silverado bed?

Throwing this out for opinions......

I got whacked last week in the side of my bed and going to get some insurance money from the other driver.

It will be my choice on how to repair.

Have not gone to a body shop yet for the estimate - I understand you can replace just a side on a bed so that's probably the way they will go.

However the estimate comes out - I'm up for tackling the job myself so looking for input for those who have BTDT.

This is my 2002 work truck and has 180K on the odometer so I want it to look presentable but don't plan on attending any concours events in the near future.

New skin.

Haven't done this myself but the cost to fix vs replacement is usually too high.

There are lots of sharp creases in the panel that will be difficult to hammer out and the box is double skinned through where some of the damage is so that will make it more difficult to get to the back side of it. YMMV

Yup, that side of the bed is just a skin. Slice if off above the dent and weld in a patch. Probably won't cost much to have the body shop do it. Given that its a 2002, I bet you could find and entire bed for a cheap. Rattle can it white if its the wrong color.

I had a work truck that I painted with a foam roller and Rustoleum (watered down with some acetone). I swear, it looked it pretty damn good, and lasted as well.

I am far far away from an expert body-man but I will chime in anyway.

If it were a rare high dollar car with very limited parts availability the panel might get repaired. It is a exceedingly common work truck. The panel can be replaced easily. R&R and respray. Done. I personally would INSIST on a OEM part and not a Chinese re-pop. Used would be better that a Chinese part.

Insurance will pay to do a bedside. Around here, white pickup beds are pretty easy to come by. All the frackers, remove them, and put flatbed welding rigs on their trucks. The whole bed is pretty easy to change, 4 bolts, and a wire harness, you just need 4 buddies to help you lift it off and on. You could check local Craigslist , and maybe that may be an easier route for you .
The bed side is sort of ****ty to replace by itself ( from what I hear ) .
There is a bunch of bracing up under that damaged area, so you will not really be able to push it out from the back side very successfully .
Best of luck Baz, If you were close , I'd be right over to lend a hand. I changed out my bed on a Saturday afternoon in my yard with minimal tools .

I wasn't thinking of banging it out because of what you said, Billy.

Either new bedside cut in or whole new bed. I looked on CL last night, Fred and nada. I have lifted the bed up before to change the fuel pump (twice) so I know the 8 bolt routine and have plenty of help around here if it comes to that - but thanks my friend.

Short drive to the yards around Bithlo for you, they should have some on their racks. About a 30 minute drive for me, but if you get any leads , I could swing by and eyeball it before you drive out.

Agree with Fred. Call around to the local salvage yards. There's a truck salvage yard just E of Wichita that has racks of truck beds, I'm sure there's something similar in your area. If you pulled your old one off, I bet they would be willing to forklift the "new" bed onto your frame.

Replacing the whole box is the easiest way.

To replace the side you have to remove the box first and then drill out the spot welds. Then align the new panel and weld it back into place. Paint Then put the box back on. Had the side of my 08 replaced last year when the kid did the hit and run.

You can still drive it while you go shopping for a new box.

Car-part.com is your friend here Baz. But the wreckers charge hefty for beds. I like to find them from private owners.
The one I replaced mine with was from a towing company. Brand spankin new, pulled off for a utility body.
I paid 1G for it with a brand new tool box, and bedliner, not even scratched yet. beat the bushes for a while, and something will turn up .

I contacted a salvage yard south of me in Mims (thanks Techman) - they said they had one in White for $800.00.

I'm waiting to hear back about condition and possible pics of the bed.

Mims is a short drive from here so that would be ideal, if I go that route.

I think the insurance check would cover that much so this could work out.

I didn't see through your locator, Fred, any other available beds in the area. $800.00 doesn't sound bad if the bed is in good condition.

Yeah, I would not do a cut and weld myself at home. If it's DIY, then replace the whole bed and be done.
