Hospital appears to charge $153,000 to treat snakebite
A man bitten by a rattlesnake this month says he received a hospital bill totaling $153,000 for one visit, according to as the Washington Post's Wonkblog, and KGTV San Diego.
About $83,000 alone went to pharmacy costs for the medicine used to treat the bite, which is available from only one provider in the United States: UK-based BTG. Wonkblog's Christopher Ingraham reported that hospitals sometimes use eye-popping invoices in order to strengthen their negotiating position with insurance companies. Our dog got hit by a rattle snake a couple years ago.
Anti Venom was 700 per vial. 4 vials later.... Im getting into the anti venom business.

You do know that to make anti-venom the first step is to pick up a rattlesnake and "milk" it of venom.

Actually makes a very valid point. My last ER bill was 19k, and my attorney was able to talk the hospital down to 1.2k after all said and done.

5 days in the hospital. 150 is pretty cheap for 5 days including time in the ICU. Dumbass should be thankful they saved his life at all.

That was on the news down here in San Diego and I agree with the comments about he got what he deserved since we was trying to take a selfie with a rattler! Maybe the government has started taking the warning labels off, starting with snakes and fireworks and such and letting the "herd" thin out.............

Well, the taxpayers may end up footing the bill. That often happens when the guy can't lay his hands on the amount due or doesn't have the liquidatable assets to cover it.
But if a snow boarder gets lost on a hill and the county spends $153K to rescue his sorry ass, how is that any different? We seem to just expect free rescues from hikes or mountain climbs or sailing mishaps or other risky ventures. Kinda hard to draw the line.

My dog got hit by an early spring rattler in LA and it was $4500. That's with bringing the dog into emergency care within 30 minutes. So, this isn't completely insane.
I read a lot about rattlesnakes after that. I always thought it was just a big bee sting, but not any more after I saw the number it did on my dog. What I also did read was that rattlesnake bites were most common in "adolescent males". Haha - exactly - it is rare you step on one by accident. Usually people that get bit eff with them. I once was in the sierra and there were 3 of those adolescent men going to the local swim hole in shorts and flipflops, teasing a rattler in the bush. Not very smart ... add to it the location - 3 hours from cell reception ... G |
