Craigslist Surgery

Craigslist is not that big in Australia, but it certainly has a presence.
After reading the references to it on Pelican, I thought I'd check out the Australian version.

Talk about stumbling into Mos Eisley.
("a wretched hive of scum and villainy")

What really blew me away was the advertisements for cheap breast enhancement surgery in Thailand. I have seen some strange stuff over the years, but it never occurred to me that there's people out there who think "Cheap third world cosmetic surgeon on Craigslist...now that's a good idea!"

Wow. Just...................wow.

Surgery, of all sorts, in 'third world' countries is very common. And frequently superior to 'more civilized places'.

India does a booming business.

I wouldn't dismiss it as a bad idea before checking the facts.

Sounds like the people here in AZ that will cross the border to Mexico for dental work on the cheap... I'm sorry, but they can't even guarantee clean water down there, NFW am I letting them work on my mouth.

My wife is doctor from India, and we've spent quite a bit of time over there. Her sister had a serious disease, and we ended up taking her to the hospital a few times so my wife could talk to the doctor. The hospitals were modern and clean, and crammed with foreigners. If I had a grave disease, I would seek treatment in India without hesitation.

The American medical system is an appalling rip off.

If you really want a laugh, check out the personal ads. My wife and I spent a good 30 minutes reading through them a while back, they run the gamut between horrifically sad and absolutely hilarious.

For some the choice is no surgery at home or surgery overseas. Some people simply can't afford surgery in North America.

There are a lot of American seniors who do that. A lot of retired Military.

It's so sad. I knew a guy who went there for dental work and had a heart attack in his car coming back to California, and died. I am fairly certain that the multiple surgeries caused it.

The difference, even in the U.S., between average medical care and excellent medical care is VAST. Just think back to school, and the difference between the "C" student and the Valedictorian. It's that kind of vast. The one thing to never take chances on, and never cheap out on, is any kind of medical care.

The stuff your dentist in AZ sends out for is probably made in a lab in Mexico. Most of it is. People have some kind of misconception that American medical care is the best out there. Not by a long shot.

Really? Which part?

My wife and son get their dental work done in Russia. Much cheaper then the USA and they can get procedures done there that they don't do in the USA.

Don't know about now, but Thailand and Brazil used to be leaders in cosmetic surgery.

I agree with your last sentence - America~'rip off'.

But India has a problem with political grandstanding. Please understand, not trying to be disrespectful to your bride but only of India as a whole. They want to show the World as being leaders of the field.

Perfect example is the Tree Man. There's a few documentaries on HPV's of the skin but you should take a look on youtube for the one from India. So called leading doctors decided it was in the patients best interest to just hack saw the pounds off.

But, there's a US doctor who's been studying the rare disease and was in the right direction in a cure, had the best interest for going there and medically treat the patient. At the last decision, India gov. denounced the US doctor and widely publicized only India's doctors as being 'heroic' in the buctcher type surgery.

I think Thailand is still among the leaders in cosmetic surgery. They do millions of cosmetic procedures every year, and that includes transforming men into women and vice versa.

Medical care in the US is a business. It's about money and it's about profits. The quality of care here is generally good but it's only good enough to prevent caregivers from getting sued. It is not necessarily the best in the world.

I would not price shop dental care. Ever.

The mouth is the gateway to bacterial infection in the body.

I would search for a dentist that is a certified board examiner from the American Academy of Dentistry.

There are dentists here on this chat forum who you can speak to about that.

And if they are taking x-rays of your wife and child's heads, remember that those procedures, if done egregiously wrong, can kill them.

If you are seeking more serious treatment, say for gum infections, then each specialist, such as a Periodontist, should also be a Fellow of the American Academy of Periodontists.

Again, unless you can not afford excellent care, you should seek out the top care that you can afford.

American medicine does set the bar for the rest of the world. Can you find a quack doctor in the US? Sure, they all work for Kaiser. And they can kill you as fast as anyone.
