8 Nuclear Weapons the U.S. Has Lost | Mental Floss
And these are the known ones. By us. Only. A friend of mine who was a USAF nuclear weapons specialist (E-5 or E-6 I think) once told me nuclear weapons would "go missing all the time" during inventory checks and "they'd usually turn up in a day or two". Not entirely sure if he was yanking my chain or embellishing a bit, but still... Yikes.

I know a security forces officer at Minot who was at the scene where a kid driving with a nuke in back swatted at a bee, flipped the vehicle, and the nuke goes rolling down the road... They recovered that one though.

I keep telling my buddy who lives in Savannah that the government was trying to kill him in 58 when he was born. He actually believes it.
They can't find it because there is a nuke processing plant up river that has dumped crap into the water for years and the whole bay sets the needles bouncing on Geiger counters. The story I read on it years ago said it probably broke the outer case when it hit the water and was buried in the mud. To recover it would cause more of a environmental disaster than leaving it where it is.
