Windows 10 Recovery with 8.1 DVD......

The past several days I had been experimenting with making mods to my Windows 10 upgrade and one was the lock/login screen which I hated the images. So I used a utility to change the images to some of our black powder matches and initially there were no issues. Yesterday afternoon the login screen decided not to load but would just flash and go back to the lock screen. Hummmmm, I tried starting in safe mode but the 8.1 and 10 versions are hard if not impossible to catch with either F8 or Shift+F8 so I decided to try my 8.1 DVD to see if the upgrade would roll back or ?????

After booting with the DVD it said "analyzing Windows 10 problems" which really surprised me and the it asked if I wanted to shutdown or troubleshoot so I started looking at troubleshoot options and what did I see.....a choice to roll back to a date three days ago so I selected that and it worked. The PC rebooted and the lock screen/login both are fine!

I had to go through and reset the colors, backgrounds and security settings I had made but all is well now. I have NO IDEA how that worked but it seems Microsoft may have done something okay here. I am doing a recovery point each night at 1:00AM just in case so in case my adventures cause issues in the future. Hope this helps anyone out there using version 10?

I'm mulling it over. Windows 8 is such a POS and 10 could be worse. I just went thru an event with non-loading pictures which had worked OK earlier.....2 days of pissing me off ceased when it started working again....for no apparent reason. It could easily go to hell again for the same reason.

I would be happy to go back to Vista were it a simple matter. I'll hold back on 10 for a bit.

If you are trying to do the update/upgrade and get an error, do a search on that weird alpha-numeric number that shows up and in most cases it will require you to delete directories and files in C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download\*.*. I made a RAR file of the items in that area as they are the files for all updates done to the computer. Once I did that the whole process completed in 1 1/2 hours or so.

If someone can fix the issues with Office 365 and Windows 10 and Network drives, I'll be happy.

Well, at least they're admitting it is real

Hi everyone,
This is Bryan from the Office team. We are extremely sorry to learn that some of you are running into an issue with Office after upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10 where some of your Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents are failing to open with various error messages, such as:
Word: “Word experienced an error trying to open the file”
Excel: “This file is corrupt and cannot be opened”
PowerPoint:
“The application was unable to start correctly"
“PowerPoint found a problem with "
“Sorry, PowerPoint can’t read "
We are actively working on a fix to resolve this issue, but in the meantime, if you are running into this issues the following workaround should help unblock you:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3086786
This issue is encountered when a document is opened in Protected View. Protected View is a security feature in Office that opens potentially untrusted files in a secure sandbox where users can read them without fear of the file taking over their computer. You may have seen a number of posts that recommend solutions to disable or bypass Protected View to prevent this issue. We strongly discourage you from following these suggestions as it reduces the security of Office and leaves your computer open to attack from malicious users.
Once the workaround is completed, files which were previously causing this issue, should now open in Protected View allowing you to read them first within a secure sandbox and allow you to enable editing if you trust these files and need to work with them further.
We apologize for the inconvenience caused due to this issue!
Sincerely,
Bryan
