When Did The 928 Become $125k cars?
I really like the 928 (especially the later 32V models with a 3rd pedal), so from time to time will browse eBay. I stumbled upon this black and black GTS with over 36k miles and was surprised on the asking price, granted this is the holy grail of the lineage.
What says y'all...this should be interesting.

LOL is what I say. All of the '80s water pumpers seem to be slowly appreciating, but that's G50 930 money for a fairly unloved model. Crack smoker.

Makes me wonder what they gave the PO for the trade-in.
That's a nice dealership. We stopped in for their Le Mans party.

Just the thought of replacing the old/rotten wiring harness in a 928 makes my head spin. Restoring a 911 is comparatively so much simpler.

Was it even that much new?
Crazy. I'm all for seeing "not a real Porsche" Porsches appreciate in value (helps me - I own a few) but that's just madness.

I remember walking around a Porsche dealer around 1992 and seeing the window stickers on 928's that were over $100K. Seemed crazy at the time but I guess that's about the same as 911 turbo pricing today.

Maybe $30,000, if the PO was lucky.

That would be a fun car for $30k, but I don't think I would give any more than that.

Good for all the 928 owners out there. Saw one on the highway on Monday. It definitely stood out (particularly as it was Guards Red). But I never cared for the styling, so what do I care if these things sell for a gazillion dollars?

its a lovely car and should be quite valuable being a manual, gts, low miles. I have no idea what the actual value is but 50-70k doesnt seem absurd.
I would love to daily drive that thing for the next 200k miles, but I am not brave enough for such a pursuit.

You'll spend $125K trying to fix a 928.

It would be awesome to buy as a CPO warranted car from the dealership. Maybe the 125k would seem cheap. Maybe drive the dealership out of business.
Are 928s really THAT bad though?

It has not been uncommon to see these (immaculate) GTSs listed in the 60-70 range- whether they trade for that it not is an entirely different story but they do appear to move. I see a similar thing happening with real nice examples of the E31 8 series cars. Maybe there's an ultra small niche market for the last run of these heavy, über complicated GTs.
I have always liked 928s (especially in GTS trim)- I have a client that has one and it makes for a nice ride-but I can think of SOOO many better things to do (car and non-car related) for that kind of scratch. |

60000 928s were produced.
Less than 4000 of those were GTS or GT. There were almost twice as many Testarossas produced between 84-91. A manual GTS, the pinnacle of an iconic model will be collectable, regardless of its mechanical faults. Now I don't think it's anywhere near the asking price here(asd I didn't bother to look at the ad). But I picked the Testarossa for a reason. I think those cars should trade on par for similar condition.

1:4 that even had a 3rd pedal for 928's.
Flippers disgust me; nicer examples on evilBay for half that price. Last edited by Arizona_928; 08-12-2015 at 10:07 AM.. |

If I were to "make offer," it might be in the $50s. Anything more does not reflect market reality today.

The problem with the Testarossa comparison is a) the T car, despite its flaws, is a 12 cyl Ferrari and sounds like one and b) the GTS looks the same as a run of the mill 928 whereas the T car looks like a Testarossa. No way they trade at par.

Agreed, even though over 9,000 Testarossas were sold, that car was on a different level to the 928.
I think a nice 32V 5 speed 928 is a great buy at $20k - $25k.
