Are new cars too big for the infrastructure?
Check out 4:15 into this video
I know that roads in North America tend to be wider than those in the UK, and that this car is a wide bodied race replica, but still? In the name of safety, are cars becoming unusable and will they need to trigger other changes? Highways Parking spots at malls? Home garages ?

The owners of a Ford EXPEDITION have many stories of not fitting in the standard garage door of many houses.

Probably because the average American packs their garage so full of crap that there's zero room for cars. I have a very small two car garage and could still fit an F150 Supercrew in it, but that was with the nose to the wall and about one foot between the door and the rear bumper. There's still just enough room for a car or minivan beside it.

The original question of the OP depends on where you live. Back East, the roads are more narrow, and parking is very sparse. Big vehicles can complicate that quickly. Here, in Arizona, we have more than ample parking and our roads are actually quite wide, so a big SUV like that has no issues (barring crappy driving); a wide roadster would be a complete non-issue.

Have you seen the size of a '59 Caddy? How in the world did they fit in the garages of the houses of the late '50 early '60's

A bigger issue is tractor/trailers. There is a busy paper factory down the street from my office. I watch 53' trailers all day long making a right turn in front of my office window. From one 4 lane city street to another 4 lane city street. They start from the inside lane, into one or sometimes both oncoming lanes, to make the turn. Some of them sit and wait forever for a break in the oncoming traffic, backing up cars to the next light. Others just blow through without regard to any oncoming traffic. Hard to say which is worse. Quite a change from the tractor trailers (28'?) of the 50's. |

I am frustrated with vehicles getting bigger and bigger. To keep the same size car, you have to down size a model every 10 years. I guess it is like the garment sizes. There will be a limit with the infrastructure. It is bearable here in CA but in Europe it has to be a mess. Even the 911 is a PIG now and can't be fun to drive on small country roads or park in the city.

I don't think cars are getting bigger. To me, they seem like they are just about the smallest they've ever been. I guess it's possible that they were a bit smaller in the late 80s and early 90s and have maybe grown a bit since then due to safety regulations, but to me it seems like there are many, many more small cars on the road than there were in the past, at least, here in the US. Are there still some big cars or cars with big dimensions? Sure, always have been and always probably will be.

I think cars are just a little bigger, by a few inches. Now, trucks are a different story. Taller, bigger, wider. YOu have to be 6'5" to life something onto the tailgate. This is a two wheel drive truck.

I agree completely - the one car I've seen at least look like it got a little smaller was the previous generation Accord. Everything else keeps growing and growing...
