Hughesnet satellite

Is anyone familiar with Hughesnet? We live in an area where our AT&T internet is painfully slow. my wife has the chance to work from home but needs to upload and download files. Is Hughenet a viable option? Thanks .

They have very high latency, however if your wife's company allows her to use something like Citrix for connectivity and application presentation it will be somewhat "useable."

Depends.

Average size of files?

Hughs has plans with decent download but upload is only 1-2 mbs.

Data usage is capped.

Latency can be high.

If she needs to work through a corporate VPN it won't work well.

Kinda pricey for what you get.

Can you get FIOS?

Just googled FIOS. Looks like I will be calling them to see if we can get it to our place in the mountains. Thanks for the tip.

Good luck. We had FIOS when we lived out east. Hands down the best service for both TV and Internet. Unfortunately the high cost of running the fiber optics into communities has made it available in only major population centers. Also unfortunately for me there is no FIOS in Colorado.

I live in a rural area with poor internet service to many. For local satellite users, those getting their internet over DISH are far more happy that the Hughsnet subscribers.

Maybe you can find a local Dish satelite user and compare upload/download speeds?

You could try a WISP (Wireless Internet Service Provider), I used one once for a remote office in the middle of nowhere.

Try these guys

digitalpath.net | phone + internet

or one of the resellers

I have dish network and love the TV service... so I decided to try their satellite internet... which I believe is similar or exactly the same as Hughesnet.

How shall I say this? It sucks donkey appendage's... long story short we dropped the satellite internet and now are using out smart phones with 4G to access the internet at home. It is the same speed and doesn't cost us any extra.

If you can get FIOS do it, I would if I could. Comparing FIOS to satellite is like comparing a 993 to a 1968 beetle.

Spiral Internet . Making the Switch to Spiral DSL
I'm interested but pretty underwhelmed by their website, why can't providers like this give me a simple map showing if their service is available in my area or not?

I already have dish for my t.v. They said I could not get their internet service. By the sounds of it that doesn't matter anyway. I am waiting for a phone call from Verizon to see if I can get FIOS. I am not getting my hopes up however.

Wow....exactly the same problem I have. Retiring and moving to remote CO, Centurylink beams into the area, but house is just off the top of the hill with trees all around; can't get the signal. So, have been comparing satellite plans. Seems they most run around $75/mo for snail mail speed and just 15 GB prime and 15 GB 0200-0800 data....Hughesnet or Dish (haven't seen DirectTv yet). I've heard that one of them will include Netflix, but still.......maybe I'll go back to building a tower, but then Centurylink doesn't have the best rep either.

I'm guessing because the dish internet is/was so phenomenally bad they are probably discontinuing the service. I am drop dead serious that it is no faster than 4G on a smart phone, sorry that is no help for you in your situation.

Did you read the section "BEST PRICING" ?

Why does it cost $15 extra a month if they mount the antenna in a tree?

Does the tree charge for using its trunk?

Probably extra labor in trimming branches that may interfere with the signal or coming out periodically to readjust the dish would be my guess.

In Canada it's called XploreNet and basically they treat you like a pretty boy in prison.

hughesnet sucks sucks sucks.

sucks

SUCKS.

Inept India help service call center.

Billing is in Phillipines.

I used them for 32 months, and had 36 trouble dead internet service calls to them.

RUN LIKE THE PLAGUE IS DESCENDING UPON YOU.

HughesNotWork is a more accurate title.

just to be clear, I had very strong signal strength, but maybe 500K-750K download speed.

I'm talking Dead Dog Slow..........and the tech center is worthless unless you have 45 minutes to be on hold shouting at them you want their supervisor or Tech 3 & 4 support which is a small group of English speaking americans in Florida.

do not sleep with the beast, the genital warts are not worth it.............

now, do you really want to know how I feel?

bastages to the core.

I'm typing this now as I'm on Hughes net. We have no other option, its the only thing available where we live. I will say that the customer service has been a whole lot better in the past 4 months. I'm going on 2 years with them. What sucks is that as you get close to you plan limit the service is slower than dial up. Forget about any type pf streaming, it sucks down the plan really fast. And anyone else that advertises as a competitor is actually doing the same thing. Compare prices and they all are about the same price. We should be getting ATT out here by next year.

FIOS won't come out here because AT&T is already here. Funny thing is we have fiber optic cable going down the county road that abuts my property. No one has permission to access it yet. The company that is trying says its years and lots of $$$$$ away.

WISP is what I have, it needs line of sight, but they can go through some trees. It's a "your neighbour next door can get it, but sorry you can't because there's a building in the way" type of deal.

Here they come out and check for free, often walking around with a receiver on a pole, they either get a signal or they don't.
