Need to move stuff from CT to TX...ideas?

Need to move some furniture from CT to TX. I was going to rent a truck and drive but I gotta think that a moving company would be better than 1700 miles of a governed 18 footer...

What do you guys think?

If you have time look for a partial load heading this way.

I moved some stuff here from FL that way.

You will get what you pay for
A real DOT number, with insurance, and airide equipment cost more then a some gypsie outfit
DEMAND a Cert of insurance if you care about the stuff.
Have it faxed to you from their underwriter.

Having done two cross-country moves, three other long-distance moves and currently preparing for a major relocation on the order of 5,000 miles away, I'll offer the following:

If I've learned nothing else - moving sucks. There is no upside to it. It's just stuff. Sell things, get rid of them, donate them, have a yard sale or whatever. It's very rarely worth it. I don't get attached to things. When I move I'll ship one car, a motorcycle, some clothes, a laptop, a few books (like two boxes, no more), maybe one box of miscellaneous personal items, my road bicycle and a surfboard. That's probably about it - I'll probably bring the feeder, fountain and a couple of toys for the cats too. No furniture. I don't care - I'll buy new stuff there or rent furnished. It's not important.

IMHO, it's not worth the trouble. There's hardly anything so important to make the rigors of a long distance move worth it. Sell and get new stuff later. Seriously. It's very likely not worth the trouble. Even if stuff is "valuable" to me that just means I can sell it for more. Moving companies suck and it's not worth throwing out your back or wasting your time or stressing.

Craigslist is your friend - good luck!

How about getting a POD? Have someone in CT that can load it? Might be cheaper than a true moving van line effort.

Pods has absolutely TERRIBLE online reviews. I've been looking at them and there are a lot of complaints.

Built a house for a woman that used a POD. When she had it dropped and opened it up, it was full of mold. Nothing was usable.

Its my Dads stuff. Much will go to donations. There are a bunch of family antiques that my great grand father made and several pieces that have been in my family for over 150 years. Doesn't seem right to sell them or give them away.

Anything you donate, donate it in CT. No point in hauling it to TX and then giving it away. I would definitely keep the important stuff. What you do with it depends upon how much you have. If it's not too many pieces, getting a moving company to haul it might not be worth it. If it's just a partial load, it will get transferred from truck to warehouse to truck and there's an increased risk of damage. I'd probably go get it, as someone would have to be there anyway to oversee a moving company that loaded it up.

Road trips are an adventure, anyway. Go have one.

What you can't put in boxes and take to the bus station, sell. If you can't drive it or tow it behind your truck, get rid of it.

Seems to be a shortage of sentimentality from the Kalifornians. Must be something in the wine...

I kinda like the idea of a road trip. I can fly up with my Son, we pack it up Friday then head out. 27 Hours of windshield time...

Californians are the stupidest people on earth, all that sunshine has baked their cabeza's into the consistency of mush. It is truly the land of indolent Eloi. Eat, sleep, take drugs, fk and lay on the beach is all they are good for.

If you use a common carrier, be careful and check the insurance section. Most only insure goods for around $1/pound, unless you buy additional coverage.

Almost everything of sentimental value to me fits in a fairly small box, or I can drive it.
