Were you once a SoCal owner of a Black 2006 Cayman S? This might be your car!

X-posted from Rennlist

Hey all, anyone know this ride? A black 2006 Cayman S w/ JIC Coilovers, GIAC tune/throttle body, Black 19" wheels, and PCCB calipers with steel rotors, an exhaust and a Fletcher Jones license plate frame, all apparently added before the current owner. Carfax shows it being a bit of a "village bicycle" with 6 different owners around the SoCal area: Trabuco Canyon, Riverside, Temecula, Costa Mesa, Oceanside, then finally Valencia where the current owner resides.

I am looking at it real closely, but I like what I see. Just wanted to get in touch with the former owners to see what it's deal is.

Changed hands every 1.5 years? Now sitting in a carport in Valencia? I am sure the price represents the history, but still. Even if you find 3 owners, you'll only know half the story. Does it have full maintenance records?

I am the second owner of my 993. First owner kept it for 9 years. I have had it for 9 too.

Service history is partial. Carfax is clean, but that I take that with a heavy dosage of salt. It's going in for a PPI tomorrow morning.

I love the assumptions that car buyers make based on little to no actual knowledge of the car. Tracked hard.....why? Because it has some excellent modifications? I've had a number of nicely modified cars that have no signs of track use.

That looks like a nice Cayman with some very nice upgrades. I had a 2006 with PSS9s, full Fabspeed exhaust, tune, and some other misc goodies, it was an absolute scalpel of a car that you could still drive daily.

Also, does it show 6 different actual ownership changes or just registered in different towns? If it just says that registration events happened at different offices, that means nothing in itself. Carfax does not show any addresses of owners, only the location of DMV office where transactions occurred.

Are you sure you know how to read one of those things? Nice looking car, BTW.

I see zero evidence of track use from the photos. What are you seeing?

Looks like it's sitting right outside its garage to me. Your 993 may or may not be in better condition than this car.

What's with the dull paint on the hood?

Looks like a clear bra to me. Paint halfway up the hood is shiny.

Yep, aging clear bra is pretty obvious on hood. No stone chips, though. One half-day track session at Willow and it would have lots of zits.

Well, I don't usually see clear bra applied in the middle of the hood, and if it's aging, why wouldn't I see the same dullness on the front of the hood and the bumper cover? Not buying that explanation.

That dull paint on the hood is an obvious indicator of an engine fire under the hood.

Yes dull, Gen 1/2 3M clear bra on the entire bumper and half the hood. No scattering of chips above it (maybe 1 or 2) so I don't think it has been tracked heavily. It's really dull and will need a replacement soon.

06-08 M97's do not have IMS failure rates like the the 996's. They still occur, but are really really rare. Scored cylinders are more common than that.

Hmm, I thought dull paint = frost = clearly a vehicle that's been north of the Wall.

I am not sure I know how to read the carfax at all actually. It just shows me registration jumping around to the aforementioned cities, and will mark each jump as a new owner. So perhaps you're right. I believe it has had at least 3 owners though. It was on a lease for it's 8K miles. Then went to Fletcher Jones, then racked up 40K miles in 2 years to put it at 48K miles. Then the next clear owner put on 3K miles in about 3-4 years.

You are right, I see the garage now. Of course my 993 is much more awesome than this car, but this Cayman will run circles around it, so it is a contender!

Let's see what the PPI brings. I am with the other posters that say you should buy this on condition. I would worry about the Carfax though from the pricing side. It needs to be reflected in pricea, as it is something everyone reads and it needs to be taken into account that during re-sell, you may see less action due to the carfax, if it is reasonable or not ...
