YouTube Ads

Does anyone else stop caring about the video they started to watch as soon as an ad starts playing? I've gotten to where I'd rather not watch a clip if I have to watch a 30 sec commercial, so I'll just close it. I get they have to make money, but holy crap I find it annoying.

Same here
Skipping the ad asap, even look away and do anything else if I cannot skip the ad.
Annoying as hell.
I think the time has soon come when ads will be contra-productive and companies will earn more when NOT advertising.

Annoying but considering YouTube videos are free I put up with them.

Just mute the sound and wait until it's over.

I don't watch many YouTube videos anyway. Why is it that people feel like a video is necessary to communicate something that it takes half the time and one tenth the bandwidth to do so with a couple of pictures and some text?

Sometimes it's beneficial - I recently watched one showing how to adjust lawn tractor engine valves but even that could have been condensed from a 5 minute video to about 10 still images and a paragraph. That would've showed me the part I actually needed. By the time you eliminate all the needless "selfie" shots and self-promotional yammering how much of the average video is actually worthwhile content? Maybe half at best?

Ads are just one more reason I tend to skip video links and instead find simple ways to describe something or communicate information. They don't lend themselves to searchability well either. You can waste a lot of time filtering through video clips looking for something before you find one that actually shows what you need. They're just not very index-able. Pictures and written words have been used successfully in this regard for thousands of years. Videos occasionally have their use / benefit but seem to be overused these days. 'Cept for porn. Then they're fine.

I can't think of the last time I bothered to watch anything on broadcast television - it's all on-demand now (Netflix or Apple TV). I get what I want for far less than basic cable would cost and no commercial BS. It baffles me that some people still cling to the conventional model and get ripped off monthly to get content they don't want loaded with advertising crapola. Why?

Then fire up a new thread and tell us (me, a tech doofus) how to not get ripped off.
I'd like to not be paying $80/mo. for DTV...but I'm a news junkie.

Any decent ad-block software added to your browser will take care of youtube ads. I personally use ad block plus with FireFox. It's free and takes less than twenty seconds to download and install.

I use FireFox with uBlock Origin - I used to use AdBlock Plus, but it turns out their business model was to get some market share and then shake down advertisers to pay to let their ads through.

I was starting to think there were more ads creeping in than there used to be...thanks for the tip!

My Gay Disco Llamas hate the ads with a passion. I had to take their Wi-Fi away from the barn.

I'm actually far more annoyed by people that don't know enough to edit out the 5 minutes of footage that precedes the 2 seconds of action that you were watching it for.

Of course you try to scrub ahead which just makes the video buffer longer than if you'd just stuck out the 5 minutes of boring driving down the highway.

LOL! Yeah, I just had to critique a vid about rebuilding a carburetor. The guy included every turn of the screwdriver on every screw, including dropping the screwdriver. It's not like we didn't get the idea after the first couple of turns on the first screw.
