I know that I would rather be following behind a parade of VW TDi's than behind a metro bus.

Really, what's the big stink about?

I guess it would be fun turning up at the dealership with a worn out old VW and saying you want your original purchase price money back as it was sold to you under false pretenses.

We are getting 60mpg on the road with our 2015 Golf Diesel and I just filled up for $2.59 a gallon. That's pretty funny.

What do you think an electric car runs on?

Most of them run off coal, it's just getting burned somewhere else.

Its called 'a sense of humor'. Research it, and practice. Eventually, you'll get the hang of it.

In the meantime, enjoy your depreciation curve.

I am not worried about the depreciation curve, and I guess you didn't think I was funny. We will see what VW does and when, till then, 60 mpg on cheap diesel.
It already has 30,000 miles on it.

We giggled like school girls passing TDI's on the highway. Waving and coughing. It was fun. They looked at us WTF. Half of them don't even know yet.

I have read there are bumper stickers in the works.

Even at it's worst, a 2 litre TDI is still WAAAAY cleaner than a 1.6 litre IDI. Probably cleaner than a little 5kw diesel generator for Doug's sake!

The news media has really blown this one apart to the point that they make it sound like these things are dirtier than a DEEtroit that's halfway running on it's own oil.

I thought the unqualified statement "up to 35 times more pollution" was especially harsh. 35 times more than...what? A 350 Cummins? No, the real answer is 35 times more than EPA Tier 2, Bin 5 standards for NOX emissions of .07g per mile (less than half the European standard) , but the talking heads would rather leave you, the viewer to draw your own sparsely educated conclusions. It's more sensational that way.

The exhaust still smells like Tru-Green ChemLawn.

Hard Drive, the pic is awesome! You two nailed it on the over reaction.

So, I've been playing around with the numbers.

The Golf Diesel get 30/45 mpg. Unabated NOx allowance 0.07 grams/mile. Most of my industry looks at PPM level for exhaust.

I found one reference for Air to Fuel Ratio

Quote:
When we dyno vehicles to fault find, we also check boost pressure and air fuel ratio with a wide band lamba senor at the exhaust pipe.

The ideal ratio is 18:1 for good power and very minimal smoke emmisions.

This has also been proven after we reconditioned the pump and injectors for this vehicle. Too low a/f and they get smokey, too high they can lack power. At a cruise situation they can go as high as 40:1.

You can go lower with a/f but the exhaust temps start to rise pretty quickly on a turbo application.

Hope this helps.
Diesel fuel/air ratio - Engine & fuel engineering - Eng-Tips

So, I figure that the allowable limit of 0.07g/mile at the 18:1 and the 40:1 ratios.

45 mpg

3220.63 grams per gallon

71.57 grams per mile

AFR 40 to 1 - Under cruise

2934.37 grams per mile

23.9 ppm

AFR 18 to 1

1359.83 grams per mile

51.5 ppm

While these number seem high school to me, they are supposed to be without SCR or water injection, on a compression ignition engine, vs. continuous flow gas turbines. I know unabated numbers on the GTs with diesel would be well over 600 ppm with the old standard combustors.

The latest requirements are 3 ppm, but this is natural gas which is "easier" keep in the low NOx ppm regions. No one is making Gas Turbines without water injection for diesel fuel under 42 ppm. And even then, you make LOTS of CO, which is now a no-no.
