You don't know what you're talking about regarding the market for this car, you should bow out of the discussion. No one is claiming that it doesn't need a total resto.
As for "the Maestro" GC, I don't think you could have had a conversation with him about Porsches. He would have fallen asleep. This is a guy who owned 917s and 904s, was one of the few guys in the world who could build and set-up a 4-cam motor right, etc., etc... Who cares why he set this car aside. |
It's just an asking price, the market will decide.

I think the ad shows pretty much what you're going to get. Nobody with any decent experience in the market would fail to understand what the car is, what it needs, etc. Most serious buyers, myself included, would fly up and look at the car in person.
You may not like the car, think the price is ridiculous, whatever. You don't know much about the market, so I'd suggest finding something else to do. JR |

Ten years ago when I bought '065, a car like Grady's, in its current condition, with all the parts there, was a $15,000 car. These days, thanks to half a decade of central bank liquidity and a vastly expanded global market for these cars, absolute rust bucket fred flintstone cars with non-matching engines, or no engine, are going in the low five figures. Having spent the last decade on and under SWB cars, let me tell you what you're NOT seeing: rust- the high colorado elevation means that it's likely a rust-free example, even if the paint has oxidized. Missing parts-- look carefully at the photos. . . it's all there, and it was adult owned, even if storage has taken its toll. The decklid is an easy fix, as is the dent in the rear quarter. . . I would even leave the 72S spoiler. Oh, and the motor? Do you remember when Grady said he had a 2,8 in the car? That motor may have gone into his 914, but it's definitely worth looking at. My guess is that it's the original matching numbers engine which he said he removed and stored. Have you noticed the asking prices for complete aluminum SWB engines lately, also in the low five figures? There are many things to see in the photos. . . the market sees them. I wish I lived closer it would be fun to take a look and remember our friend who gave so much to this community. |
I would not be surprised if it had interesting ratios in the gearbox, or other desirable modifications. Grady had the knowledge, had access to the interesting parts and was the kind of guy that would have modified his cars to suit his purposes. I think whoever buys it will have a little fun when the car is taken apart and its secrets are revealed.

Any complete SWB 911 without major rust is 30-40K and if it runs and stops 50-60K.
The fact this might be really rust free and have some cool parts could easily bring it higher regardless of who owned it, that would be icing to the right buyer for even more $ to the seller. A Corvette collector told me once that often the best person to buy from is an "expert" in the Marque you are interested in, because they are so sure of themselves they do not bother checking for currant market prices and often sell well bellow market, I think this thread illustrates that theory well. |
I have not read this whole thread, but back in the day we had a Pelican get together in Fort Collins at my house and I had the pleasure of spending a lot of 1 on 1 time with Grady just talking cars etc. I have never been a SWB guy and at the time had my 964T, but it was a great time sitting around and enjoying a Warsteiner that he had brought with him.

I wonder if a shoot for the moon asking price like this doesn't work against the seller. A guy with some interest might not even touch in, hoping to negotiate with a reasonable seller. As to market value, isn't there a premium for that car here in Pelicanland? Wouldn't many here really enjoy watching it being brought back and enjoyed as a memento of Grady? I will not be surprised to see it end up with some pelican somewhere. I'm hoping anyway. Cheers Richard |

One thing going against the car is the stampede is over. I've been talking with potential early S buyers and many got burned rushing into the market. Last fellow I spoke with put $100K into a 6-figure purchase price car. It is a Hagerty 1, and the value is there, but he's being extra cautious as are others who have contacted me on this car. Everyone wants a bargain, so they tell me.

Wonder if this car was ever modified with Grady's "Rubbermaid Solution". :)
If anyone other than Grady had proposed the Rubbermaid solution, it would have been roundly criticized, summarily dismissed, and lumped in a pile of gererators, erams, and cool collars. |
Ironically, there are production cars that use a similar system. My kid's Subaru WRX Sti has a water sprayer for the intercooler.

It needs resto but it's a great starting point being original and apparently rust-free. I might take a swing at it depending on how high the auction goes. It would be a quite valuable early 911 once restored properly with its equipment and interesting history. It would matter nil if it changed hands between collectors once or twice at this point. The fact that you focus on the *one owner* aspect illustrates how little you know about the market for this car. :cool: |
amazing...been years since I have been active on the forum (sold my 911...still kicking myself) and Grady to this day is one of the guys who I always respected. RIP Grady.
