Modern hand spoons
I have an old Russian issue pistol but I'd like to pick up something more modern and reliable. I went to the range the other day and rented a few glocks. I didn't really like them. Felt very plasticy and the angle of the handle was too like swept which I felt made me less accurate.
What do you guys like for modern pistols? No CCW just something reliable and accurate ![]() |

SIG. That pretty much ends that thread for me. I love the quality, I love the grip angle, I love the reliability. I have a 938 and 226. Though I think a 1911 fits my hand better than anything else that I've ever shot.
I'm another Glock hater. Super reliable but they are like shooting a brick.

Good options
Well, I'm not sure how modern, but it's very hard to go wrong with a 1911 Another great option is a Browning High Power The mustang and challenger to the Glock's camaro Smith and Wesson M&P Springfield Armory XD family Both are reasonably priced, reliable plastic weapons. I think both have a better grip angle than a Glock Sig Sauer make lots of nice guns that are very well liked, metal or plastic, lots of styles and sizes. I think the 226 is popular. Beretta 92fs is another common option. How much are you looking to spend and what are you going to do with it?

I really like the Walther P99, a friend has a PPQ that I shot. I didn't care for the trigger as much, but it was a superb accurate pistol.

Sig.
i am getting equally as proficient between my Glock and Sig..but the Sig feels more..i dont know. cant explain it. if i had to get rid of one, it would be a no brainer. My Glock has never jammed..not even once. and i put some rough ammo thru it. i think Glock is coming out with some new models, that are getting great ratings. i dont know..i dont even shop handguns anymore, i'm done buying.

"Modern"? How modern, and why? You are not going to be carrying it, so can we assume it's going to be a plinker and/or a home defense gun? If just a plinker, there are a myriad of "modern" .22 rimfire pistols and revolvers. If home defense, that changes the caliber requirements. Help us help you - what is its intended purpose?

While there are many fine option, I vote Sig 226. I own one in .40. Excellent weapon that can you hand down to your grandchildren.
If you want a more affordable option, I think Ruger makes great guns. Don't discount wheel guns. A pre-lock S&W 686 is a beautiful gun. A Ruger GP100 is similar. These days, ammo cost are pretty stiff, so take that into account. If you really just want to plink, a quality .22 semi-auto can be loads for fun on the cheap. |

Agreed, but my nearly new 686+ is fantastic. Arguing over forged hammers and the lock is fodder for the gun geeks. Mine is a tack driver and has been flawless. I was not able to find a single first hand account of the lock inadvertently locking the gun. Plus it holds 7 rounds, which is nice.

For reliability, you can't beat a revolver. Goes 'bang' every time. But revolvers aren't considered to be modern anymore...
Heckler & Koch makes some superbly reliable spoons, as does the other manufacturers mentioned above. The ergonimics of an HK P30 grip is significantly better than the 2x4 plank of wood feel you get from a Glock. Put one in your hand, and it simply feels like it was cast with your hand in mind. The downside to many modern firearms is their light-weight, IMHO. You definately feel more of the crack of a 9mm being fired out of a polymer framed gun (like an H&K or Glock) than a metal frame gun (like a Beretta 92FS). Target re-aquisition may require a bit more focus with a lighter gun. -Z

who stole my user ID and password? ![]() i do want a 3" 686+P or whatever it is called. just one more. and i agree with Harddrive. my Sig226 is so good. it was my brother's first service piece. it has gone thru thousands and thousands of rounds. it is patinad well. i only had to change out a few magazine springs and all was well. that thing is fantastic. mine is a 9mm. my Glock 21 SF is a 45..and i only bought it because i got it at cost.

A gun not mentioned, but worthy of note is the CZ 75. There are a few different builds depending on what you want to do with it. I had a nice silver colored CZ 85 that never missed a beat and accurate as far as 9mm's go.
A gun I would like to buy next is an Ed Brown 1911 in 45ACP. |

Semi auto is like Ford vs Chevy. Personally I think S ig is way overrated. Smith &Wesson M&P are great IMO.Wheel guns are better and a 686 is fantastic. Definitely the nightstand weapon in our home.

I have a Glock 23…It's not my favorite either. It just feels awkward. The Colt 1911 Gold Cup….Like I was born with it in my hand.

Yep, something about a 686. Hugely accurate too.

Glock is an appliance. A reliable fighting weapon, not something to be admired.
What's your interest?

I have an old Yugo Tokarev M57 (7.62x25) and it just isn't very reliable. It would be a nightstand pistol and something to take out to camping for plinking and whatnot.
Thanks for the suggestions here guys. |

There are about 100 different pistols and revolvers that could fit your needs. Whatever you think looks and feels nice is your best bet. Guns are an extremely mature technology. After over 100 years refining essentially the same few designs (revolver, locked breech, blowback), the gun designers have it down pat. Choosing between a Glock and a SIG or a 686 and a Taurus, or any quality gun, is basically like choosing between a striped tie and a paisley tie. Unless you have plans far, far more demanding than nightstand gun + plinker.

After acquiring a Glock 19 gen 2 I'm completely done with Sig Sauer. My P226 9mm is the least loved of all the guns I own. Bulky, high bore axis, goofy da/sa trigger, expensive magazines and other parts, hard to work on. That being said I wasn't a big fan of the Glock 22 gen 3 I had.
