Zombiecon 2015 Fatality

Nightmare on First Street: Fatal shooting at Zombicon

Lack of security at the event, so situational opportunist kills one, wounds four.

No one stopped this insane individual.

Expaviuos Tyrell Taylor was the victim. Not sure I understand your last sentence.

Things like this make me wonder sometimes if as a society, people have a little too much time on their hands?

I think that is an underlying cause of many of modern society's woes.

I did see the humor in the fact that so many people there had fake blood on themselves it was hard to identify the real victims.

I just don't understand the love of zombies anymore than the fascination with vampires.

Of course there is much I just don't "get" or understand. I enjoy science fiction but I just can't even fathom getting dressed up as a character from a movie or TV show and going out in public. It is not my style.

Now get off my lawn.

Amen,

When you're worried about feeding the family or where you will sleep, you don't manufacture things to be offended by, or imagine yourself as squirrel-kin. We're victims of our own success and the need for people to have conflict with their environment.

Me either. The zombie thing seems to be a relatively new phenomenon. I didn't even know what a zombie technically was until a few years ago. Now we have a "zombie walk" in our town every October.
There have been vampire movies since the early days of cinema. Nosferatu was a creepy movie, but one vampire movie was enough. Then Interview With a Vampire came along and all of the sudden vampires were sexy - another thing I don't get.

Lots of people in this world spend so much of their time PRETENDING to be someone they are not, they don't have enough time to develop a real personality or self-image.

IOW they are NOT real people.
And that is sad. Pitiful.

The zombie phenomenon seems to be a response to modernity and represents the unexpressed anxiety we all have with how complex our society has become. "Zombie" is a metaphor for all the hidden dangers of society. The beauty of it is that everyone has their own "zombie" - nuclear apocalypse, the breakdown of society, a massive grid-wide failure of all iPhones, etc. Whatever fear people have is projected into "zombies" and then is exorcised, so to speak, by dressing like zombies, zombie jokes, stockpiling ammo and food for the zombie apocalypse, etc. Zombies are just the current pop culture phenomenon of us recognizing and dealing with by making fun of our own personal demons, I mean fears.

It's also a "no-harm-done" target for violent movies/TV. Society is more politically correct. But you cannot offend any particular group casting bad guys as Nazis or Zombies. Nazis are getting a little old now, not so useful. Enter zombies!

Also note most of the zombie movies depict "a top secret government lab experimenting with bio engineering and accidently stumble across a virus that reanimates the dead."

The virus escapes and chaos ensues...

Thus tapping into the whole "the government is out of control" paranoia...

Not that the government isn't out of control, but that is another thread.

I feel bad for the people who got injured... sad that some nut job figured out how to take advantage of the situation.

I should have posted this first rather than pontificating on zombie culture.
