Ferrari built for Formula One legend to be auctioned off

Quote:
A Ferrari driven by five-time Formula One champion Juan Manuel Fangio, will be auctioned off in New York in December.

The 1956 red Ferrari is "the Holy Grail for car collectors and aficionados the world over" and could go for more than $28 million, Sotheby's auction house said ahead of its December 10 sale.

The car -- Ferrari 290 MM, chassis 0626 -- was specially built for Fangio, the legendary Argentinian driver who drove it in the 1956 Italian endurance race Mille Miglia, where he came in fourth.

But the vehicle had a distinguished career of its own, later being driven by other celebrated racers, including Phil Hill, the only US-born Formula One champion.

After it was retired from racing, the Ferrari was owned by French collector Pierre Bardinon before being purchased by its current owner, who was not named.

"Driven by the greatest drivers of the 1950s and built for possibly the greatest driver in history, this is a car with which Enzo Ferrari was personally involved and is a fundamental part of Ferrari folklore," Sotheby's car specialist Peter Wallman said.

The auction house's "Driven by Disruption" sale of cars and car-related memorabilia will also feature a blue Ferrari 500 Mondial built in 1955 and a psychedelic Porsche once owned by American rock music legend Janis Joplin.

"...and a psychedelic Porsche once owned by American rock music legend Janis Joplin."

~~~~~~~~~~
Hmm...decades ago I read that when that Porsche was ready to be picked up someone showed up and said, "I'm here to pick up the Joplin Porsche.
And he did.
Only thing was, he was not associated with JJ.
Apparently the stolen Porsche was recovered. I guess.
Unless she ordered another.
I just wonder if in the future a Ferrari owned or driven by Michael Shoemaker will have similar allure and value.
There's another one off Ferrari I just heard about - the 1953 Barchetta given to Henry Ford the Deuce during the time that Ford was trying to buy Ferrari.
I have to imagine that if that were to sell it could be worth about as much as the Fangio Ferrari?
I know it probably won't happen but it would be nice if a car like that would find itself in a museum so countless people could view such a historic piece. In a private collection only a handful of people we ever see it. Hopefully the new owner will bring it to a Goodwood type of event so more people can see it.
Nope, not even close to a Fangio car with documented history.
