Thumbs up Scientific Breakthrough May Cure Alzheimer’s

Quote:
Australian researchers are heralding an astonishing breakthrough. Using a new form of ultrasound treatment the scientists were able to clear the brains of mice of buildups of plaque and harmful proteins that cause Alzheimer’s. Remarkably, 75% of the mice they experimented on regained their memories.

Human trials start in 2017.

Very cool. Such a scary disease to watch a family member go through.

Getting old doesn't scare me, getting old and helpless, and relying on others scares me. This could change everything.

That's really exciting and encouraging news.

I don't see in the article that they can prevent the build up of proteins so I would stop short of calling it a cure. It seems treatment would be more accurate.

I'll take treatment any day - right now we don't have anything!

Either way it's progress!

I'm hopeful that this will actually lead to a bona fide cure and not a lifetime of insanely-overpriced treatments. Alzheimer's is a terrible disease and I'd love to see it eradicated.

The good news is that ultrasound technology is low cost compared with radiation or chemo. I am optimistic about this. Currently we also have a glut of ultrasound techs in the US. Yay!

Very interesting. Thanks Baz.
My mom has Alzheimers. She does not even know who I am anymore. Makes me sad. A very cruel disease to say the least.

My grandfather was a very kind and good man, until he got Alzheimer's.

He had to be institutionalized because he became a danger to himself and to others.
He was a prisoner in his restraints and died all alone, a very sad and scared man.
I can't think of many things worse than that.

If they can keep that from happening to anyone else I will consider it a true miracle.

My grandma died of Alzheimers. Horrifying to watch it happen. This is potentially excellent news -- perhaps too soon to be this excited, but 75% recovery in lab rats seems pretty incredible to me.

Lost my grandmother to Alzheimers. It was almost a relief when she passed.

Good news for those out there with the disease.

Same here. I'm not afraid of death. I'm afraid of not being able to die when the time has come.

My grandmother also ended up with dementia and alzheimers, I can totally sympathize. I missed her, but the reality was that she had been gone for quite some time. Her death was really a relief, because I knew she had finally found peace.

I used to know some Alzheimers jokes but I can't remember them

I sure hope this cure works.

I'm also one with personal experience here, with both parents suffering from some degree of dimentia/Alzheimers and a Grandmother that died with it.

So yeah, this could be huge. I agree that this is one of the scariest things to face with aging, especially if it's in your family.

My FIL was a super talented Ed China type. He would work on and repair anything. Tractors to home AC and he was a journeyman electrician. He build his first radio Ham Radio when he was a teenager. He took down a load bearing wall and rebuild the house with some amazing trusses in the attic.

His body finally died from forgetting how to chew and swallow.

It is a horrible disease.

My mother has had alzheimers for the last 3 years. Went into a nursing home this year. When I call her on the phone she has no idea who I am. This treatment will be too late to save her, but I hope this treatment really works for others to come.
