Another question for the brain trust.

My brother has a 1971 VW camper van.

He has had it since 1974. The transmission needs a rebuild.

He lives in Montgomery, Alabama and can't find a local place to rebuild the transmission. He can easily take it out but shipping that transmission is not easy.

I am looking for suggestion on a place close by to Montgomery that is willing to fix the transmission properly. Who is the John Walker of VW transmissions?

John Walker should be able to do it. They are almost the same. I've rebuilt around 40-50 911/914/915 transmissions.

I managed to ship a Porsche G50. Just find a freight place in the yellow pages or on the 'Net.

Shoot, I'd be surprised if there wasn't someplace that you could purchase an already rebuilt VW tranny, and just ship the core back.

Yeah...unless it is a REALLY reputable person, I wouldn't trust that. You are better off shipping your unit and then working with the re-builder on how much you want to spend.

Never heard anything bad about Rancho. There are some very sketchy AC VW engine rebuilders out there though.
