Interesting - I'm considering throwing a bid at it even though (1) I know I've got no chance of winning and (2) I really don't want to get into a "thermal reactor era" car. I have enough issues with a plain old '74 2.7 "S" spec engine!

This should be interesting. Being a Sporto may make it more attractive. There can't be many of them left now.

Putting aside the condition of the paint it looks decent.

Mid year, Targa, Sportomatic, transmission doesn't shift.....I'll bet $14,000.

Two years ago I sold my all original paint, 76' targa with 5 speed and only 45k miles on it for $50k. I think it still is worth that money today, if not more. I be this one will go for about $28k.

At least $40k for a decent one. I occasionally see them for less but there are typically some question marks.

I concur with fint but thinking someone with dumb money will pay $30k. They'll probably be coached by some Ferrari, Duesy, '57 Chevy type guy of the 'S' nomenclature and rarity.

As for the Sportomaty (regardless of non-working or driveable) somehow I like this weird stuff again. Not to long ago drove someone's Bug autoshift.... made me giggle. Anyways, who raced one of these back in the day? Vic Elford?

In typical Porsche fashion, the Sportomatic was a tough gearbox. The first 911 I ever drove, at age 15, was a '73 911T Sportomatic targa that belonged to a family friend. It was sepia and I remember how weird it was to get used to not touching the shifter unless changing gears, it would clutch when you touched it and suddenly you were in neutral. I also remember that the top was off and it was a brilliant Minnesota summer day.

I did not check the link before commenting but the car will bring surprising money, I'm sure.

Vic Elford's daily driver was a Sporto. He towed a trailer with it.

A Sporto ran in Le Mans.

There you go going against the conventional wisdom.
