Looks like we squids are in the majority here.

Me on the left. Probably boot camp graduation weekend, 1983. Guy on the right is one of my best friends from high school. We had both signed up without knowing the other had enlisted through the same recruiter. His boot camp departure date was a couple of months after mine. A couple of weeks before I was leaving, the recruiter called Dave to say that they had a slot open and that he and I could leave on the same day and most likely be in the same boot camp company as me. Dave nervously agreed to go early. Definitely made boot camp more memorable.

Navy SH-60B driver for a long time. My fondest memories are serving, and in many cases, re-enlisting the young men and women I served with. They ask you and I always felt it a great honor.

Why would someone who is honorably discharged after serving in the military not be considered a veteran?

Because the OP asked "Whether you consider yourself a "veteran" or not". A couple people replied that they had served, but didn't consider themselves veterans.
