I understand the heritage behind 718, but I'm going to assume that a large segment of the population is ignorant to the 718s existence and the name change will be lost on them.

Porsche's love of badging continues, I guess.

Why not just call it the 914v2?

I hope this means values for 6-cylinder Boxsters and Caymans remain steady.

I call BS. 718 was only ever an internet rumor. Porsche has denied it many times. They aren't going to change the names.

Turbo 4's are real

I'd have picked 718 for the boxster (they do kinda look alike now) and 550 for the Cayman (on acount of the 550 coupé being a good looking car... The original 718 coupé is fugly (the cayman is not)...

Dunno, feels a bit contrived to me. I'll give you a historical name of another 4cyl car to soften the blow, kinda thing... Bet those things drive nice with more torque though ! The Cayman always needed more torque !

I never understood the logic in re-naming an existing successful product line. Your customer base knows a name, they have a positive association with a name, so let's change it! WTF? But I guess I'm not in marketing either, so what do I know? Maybe they are going to market it as "all new" or something like that?

Now an unsuccessful product, that I understand. Like Land Rover re-naming the Discovery as the LR3 because the Disco was such an epic unreliable failure. Though now it's going back to being a Discovery, maybe people only have a 10 year memory for such things?

I'm betting it's the internal designation, and the # 718 will not appear on the car.
Like the 996 and 997 and 991 for various 911 models.

They aren't dropping the Boxster or Cayman names.

The new 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman will now follow in its footsteps from the start of 2016. And the Porsche maxim still holds as true today as it did then: Intelligent Performance.

The next 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman generation also shows its motor sport origins in the model range designation "718" and interprets this tradition with newly developed vehicles and highly efficient engines.

Except maybe on the name badge itself.

LOL, maybe they asked their customers and fans what we thought of all the stupid names they've come up with lately and they were so embarrassed by the results they fired their marketing dweeb and went back to basics.

I had a 911(901) for a day courtesy of Hendrick Porsche, and after driving a 911, its hard to consider a Cayman or Boxster. The 911's handling is light years superior to anything I've ever driven.

I probably might of considered one of these pre driving a new 911, but now I just have to keep saving.

That's interesting. Over the years I've had the opposite experience... Goes to show you...
The only thing the 911 had over them was better traction and power. I love the way the mid engine cars change direction... I've gone back and forth between rear and mid engine ever since...

Man, that's ugly.
Let's hope they still allow the only free option from Porsche…the delete model insignia option.

I thought there was a ruling that you can't copyright a number and that is why they stopped giving cars numbers as names?

True, but Porsche is a business and the majority of their profit comes from people ignorant of the heritage and history of the marque. Yes, the badge is what sells the car in most cases. See also: BMW and Mercedes.
