Smart TV question
If a smart TV is streaming Netflix via the wi-fi in the house, how do you get the sound thru the sound system that is hooked up to the DirectV box?

Just ask the TV. It will know if it is all that smart.
The TV should have a HDMI out. Use that to go to the amplifier.

Throw the directv box in the trash, hook the audio out from your TV to the sound system.

most tv's still have good ole fashion analog outs (RCA), or if you are one of those home theater type guys you can run an HDMI cable to your receiver.

FWIW I prefer Roku + Dumb TV to smart tv.
I have cheapish visio tvs though and the built in apps are a bit clunky.

I have Direct TV and ran an RCA line from the box to our stereo. It actually goes to a switch box to change from the TV to the DVD for when we watch movies but you get the idea.
How do you get a clear picture when there are no obstructions to the dish? ![]()

Run all of your video inputs into the TV, and run an audio out from the TV to the audio system. The TV does the source switching for you.
Alternately, run all of the video inputs to your home theater receiver and a video out to the TV. In that mode, the receiver does the source switching.

Thanks for the input guys.
It's not my TV/system, but a friend's. Apparently the TV only has an audio out for headphones on it.

A smart tv will not just have a headphone out. It will have multiple HDMI inputs, an RCA out, an optical out, and possibly an HDMI out. I suspect that your friend doesn't know what he is looking at.

Hook the audio outputs of the TV to the input of the stereo.
Hook the outputs of the DirectTV to the inputs of whatever TV input you're using. Any noise the TV makes (be it the DirecTV, Smart stuff, DVD, Antenna) will then go to the stereo.
