Vegas Strip: Car mows down over 30 pedestrians; 1 dead

11:50 p.m. ET: The driver is in custody and is undergoing various tests, including one for alcohol, authorities said.

11:45 p.m. ET: Officials don't yet know whether it was an accident or intentional.

A car mowed down more than 30 pedestrians when it went up on the sidewalk and into the entrance of the Paris Las Vegas hotel, authorities said.

At least one person was killed and 37 others injured, Clark County Fire Chief Greg Cassell said. Of the injured, seven are in critical condition.

Authorities don't yet know whether the incident was an accident or intentional. The woman driving the car was in custody and was undergoing tests for alcohol and controlled substances, authorities said.

Rows of ambulances and police cars gathered at the scene, their lights flickering. Witnesses described a chaotic scene as people fled.

"Everyone was running ... and as I was running, I saw a car up on the sidewalk coming toward us," a witness told CNN affiliate KLAS. "I saw a lady, she didn't seem like she wanted to stop the car, she had both hands on her wheel and she was looking straight forward."

People scrambled to stop the driver, she said.

"I saw men running after her, yelling, 'stop, stop!' As she was passing, we saw people running after her. Everyone was so frantic and just running around."

Antonio Nassar, who was at the Strip, described a disturbing scene.

"The car rolled right in front of me. By the time I looked over to the right, all you could see was [her] driving away and people were bouncing off the front of the car, you can hear it," Nassar told the affiliate.

"The windshield is smashed at this point. She rode the sidewalk, she came to a stop at the Paris intersection, people are punching into the window ... she accelerated again and just kept mowing people down."

Traffic snaked down the streets as cars were diverted near the Paris Las Vegas hotel, where the Strip was shut down.

Do you realize what this would do to the Vegas tourism industry if it was found (or even suspected) of being terrorism? No way will that card be played.

I thought about that - especially with how quickly they made that statement. You never get statements from LE that quick after incidents like this. It was almost like a PR release.

Update:

Lakeisha N. Holloway, 24, of Portland, has been identified as the driver, who had a toddler in the back seat when she hit pedestrians on two different sections of the sidewalk while heading north on Las Vegas Boulevard near Bellagio Way.

She has been charged with murder, child abuse or neglect and failure to remain at the scene of an accident, jail records show, and is being held without bail at Clark County Jail.

Meanwhile, LaShay Hardaway, Holloway’s cousin, said: ‘This is not like her. She’s a very successful woman, she’s always been successful, she’s an overachiever.

‘It’s not her character. We are all trying to figure out what happened. Something very tragic must have taken place in her life because this is not her.

‘This is not something she would ever do. We are so sorry for those families affected by this’.

Sheria Agum, another of Holloway’s cousins, said: ‘She’s sweet, she’s a loving mother. She’s a very strong mum’.

Miss Agum added that she last saw Holloway a month ago and after that she changed her number. Holloway’s mother told her she had not heard from her since and she ‘went off the radar’.

Miss Agum said that Holloway had been staying in Texas until recently but upon her return to the West coast she noticed a change in her character.

She said: ‘I have never seen my cousin like that. Her whole attitude changed. She was having problems down there. When she came back she was different’.
