Video orientation via iPhone

How do I change video orientation from vertical/portrait to landscape? Is it a phone setting or do I start out in landscape or do I do some voodoo when it hits my computer.

PS. I hate this crap.

Just turn your phone sideways. If the image keeps trying to re-orient itself, then toggle on "orientation lock". https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204547

+1 on the orientation lock. For quick access place your thumb at the bottom of the screen (just above the home button). Flick your thumb upward and a screen will come up to change the orientation. Also settings for Bluetooth, wifi, airplane mode, flashlight, camera and a few other settings can be changed quickly here. Brightness and volume can also be adjusted.

You can shoot video either horizontally or vertically. Horizontal is best as it will shoot widescreen and playback will fill up the whole window (none of those black bars on the side).

However, once you start a video (i.e. Press the record button) do not change the orientation. The picture won't rotate with you and you wind up with that sideways video. If you start vertical, just stay vertical because the bars are better than sideways.

The iPhone was designed to take pictures/videos in the landscape orientation. Drives me nuts when I see people holding it upright to take a photo/video. And it will end up sideways on a PC..

Also, if you tap twice on the horizontal screen prior to hitting the record button the video will be in wide screen and not with those black bars on the sides.

Something weird going on there.. If you tap the screen, you should get a small square that you can direct to be your primary focus. Shouldn't change anything on orientation or black bars.

The whole thing is subject to the expectation that video will be presented horizontally in 16:9 or 4:3 ratio.

The easiest way to envision it is to think of a physical TV, the screen size does not matter.

In order to display all of the content you need to scale it to fit either height or width.

Don't think about it as black bars, think about it as a black background that you are displaying content on top of.

The content is scaled to height and if the width of the content is smaller than the display area you see black because the content does not cover the background proportionately.

If it scales to height but the width is larger than the display area it continues to scale until the width fits but now you see black top and bottom.

OK, I got it. Have to start the video in landscape and all be cool.
