moving. fifth ring of hell.

gah.

i have a move coming up. house and my office. i just filled the office dumpster with crap i've accumulated. blew me away the ancient relics i was coming up with...paperwork mostly.

i'm subscribed to the "if it doesn't fill a need or give me joy, into the trash".

i'm staring at some old ass college text books. lots of them. thinking of filling the recycling bin up...maybe keep up to five of them..i might need some equation or something..but no..they can be found online. someone told me text books are not recyclable unless i pull the covers off. truth?

i do admit, it is very liberating to dump stuff. just picturing my garage is gonna give me nervous hives.

I've only lived in my Montana shack for 7 1/2 years and couldn't imagine packing my garage up. No way in hell. I feel for ya!

Can always try to sell 'em on half.com or amazon. Usually not worth the time though. Library donation? Goodwill? Salvation army? I've donated (no joke) thousands of dollars of crap in my efforts to streamline and downsize over the last 12-18 months (preparing for a probable relocation of my own).

I just recently moved, and tried to adhere to the same principles. Unfortunately, the move-date approached quicker than I had hoped, and by the end we were left furiously throwing things into boxes to sort at their destination... did't get to purge as much as I had hoped.

I was absolutely shocked how much crap I've accumulated!

That was the killer for me...

On a related note, I'd be in the house lecturing my wife about stuff she keeps around that hasn't seen use in 5 years, only to have the tables turned on me when she tried to apply the same principle to car parts in the garage...

The movers just finished up at my house. Moving my wife and daughter to Lincoln, NE. Two things hit me. First we have way too much crap. I mean really, we need a semi to move everything? Second is how depressing an empty house is.

I did the cross country move last June -- DC to Seattle. I spent MONTHS dumping old stuff and packing. At first, I was like, "This has some value, I'll ebay/craigslist it!" But by the end, I was exhausted and just started donating or dumping stuff, even some pretty nice stuff.

On the other hand, I live in the PNW again, my commute has gone from 3 hours a day to 35 minutes a day, and I'm surrounded by a culture that makes sense to me again. So it was painful, but absolutely worth it.

I have heard that just 5 moves is almost the same as a household fire. Lots of "stuff" gets pitched or damaged on every move.

When my wife and I bought our current hose we promised it was out last move until it was time for the old folks home or a nursing home. It has been 18 years and so far no urge to move.

My mother's parents bought a house when they were first married. Then never moved again until it was to the nursing home.

gospel.

my target goal is to buy a home within a bicycle ride to the office. i'm done with a horrific commute.

i was kinda depressed the other day. my supervisor took all my projects and redistributed them to others. it was more difficult than i expected. i met my new team, and i think the third question asked of me was, "hey, you wouldnt happen to have a sea kayak would you?"

my new group is way more outdoorsy active. the actual change might not suckass. but the actual move..no getting around it, it will hurt. i'm even selling my 911SC. over it. time to purge.

My wife has an 8 block walk to work now. My daughter has a 6 block walk to her high school.

I've worked in the same office space for 13 years or so - I've never had to move. I've got 3 ring binders of paper, books, spiral bound journals, etc - on my 3 shelves that I KNOW I haven't touched in that time. We've been told we are moving off the current floor sometime in Q1 this year. I've already told the admin - she better order numerous recycle and trash carts.....

Must be moving season!

We came to England with 4 suitcases, 3.5 years ago. Now we're moving to Germany with a house load of stuff, a dog, 5 bikes, 3 guitars, etc... And there is still another house load of things sitting at our parents' garages in Vancouver. Neither my wife nor I have lived in one continent for more than 10 years at a time, so you would think we're not too bad at packing and moving by now, but nooooo....

I moved into 9 different places in 8 years (college, and then I've lived in 5 different apartments/condos in Chicago since graduating). I'm very happy that I have no plans to move again for another 6-7 years when I trade in the city for the burbs. 3 bedrooms and 2k sq ft is fine until then.

We moved 21 years ago from a big Victorian house to a decent sized farm house with barns out in the counrty about 30 miles away. We had been married for 5 years, and I couldn't believe the amount of CRAP we had then. I can't fathom a move from where we are now, with barns full of stuff and animals with thier crap. I have been slowly going through my shop and individual drawers in the house and pitching or re-gifting the things that haven't been used in the last year.

The internet has eliminated alot of books and literature/catalogs from my possesion, but I still have a long way to go.

The purge is cathartic, we give a LOT of stuff to charity. It's hardly worth the trouble of selling most of it anyway. I'm not moving and have no desire to, my wife and I are both just OCD.

Wish I was in the market for an SC, I'd love to have another Pelican car in my garage.
