Windows 10 - ugh.

Well I took the plunge and did the free upgrade which is now running fine on my MacBook Pro under Parallels. Impressions:

1. It's faster than Windows 7
2. If there has ever been a more blatant attempt to disguise corporate data-mining of personal information as an operating system, I'm not aware of it.

I disabled every single "personalization" feature (translation: give Microsoft unfettered access to your data so they can sell it and use it to profile you, then sell those profiles too) and what I have is...

Windows 7.

Just slightly faster with a slightly nicer interface.

The attempts to coerce you into whoring yourself out to Big Data during the install are shameless and frequent during setup. My $0.02? Don't bother. Unless you like spam and being profiled.

Glad I've been ignoring the prompt for the free "upgrade". Considering how much work it took to make Win 7 tolerable, I didn't feel like rolling the dice.

I got so fed up with Windows / Parallels on my MacBook Pro, I removed it. Happy now.

Can't totally disable it all UNLESS you are hooked up to an Active Directory server and your AD Admin has turned it off via policy...

And null routing the hosts in question in your hosts file apparently doesn't work - MS has it programmed to bypass that and go straight to DNS lookup....

Windows 10 in the best windows since XP or 2000, for personal use. If you cant get people on a *nix system, it doesn't get much better so far. Every windows 7 BSOD seems to involve a wipe and restore of the hard drive, and Windows 8 speaks for itself. When I couldn't convert my aging mother to xubuntu, i ordered her a windows 10 system to replace a 15 year old PC. Networked it to a ubuntu system (there's a story there) with a shared printer in minutes. If you're worried about data mining you might as well unplug your internet or run everything through tor. Everyone knows where you go and what you do there. Apple data mines too, they just aren't as up front about it as google or microsoft.

Anyway, windows 10 is stable, the interface is decent and I base this on the fact I haven't been called to fix anyones win10 system yet. Windows 7 has a place of hatred in my heart.

I love Win10.
Just Family Safety is a PITA to set up. But it was hard in Win7/Win8 too.

My biggest complaint about Win 10 is it wants to set a computer up as a laptop and sync all the games and music and phone and the contacts. The computer I was setting up is 100% not a game machine or social hub. I want 100% speed and performance and there is not a game on the machine, no contacts, no cameras just a work station. Why in the heck do I get a Xbox and phone app that is so complex to delete?

They need a version or a setup method to strip all the junk and make a pure business workstation.

You know there is a way to get rid of the popup. KB3035583 is a file that needs to be deleted. Microlimp downloaded it with a Windoze update. Find and nuke it.

With the few hundred Win7 systems here at work the only BSOD issue we had was a buggy ATI driver. They run 24/7 without too much issues. Same at home. We have 7 units on Win7 and I couldn't tell you the last BSOD we had. Still like XP better, but Win7 works pretty well.

My laptop came with windows 8 so 10 is actually an upgrade. But yeah, it's basically 7 with a new name and a load of spyware.

Of my six computers, I still have XP on 2 that I don't use very much. The SKY has not fallen as predicted.

I have Win 10 on one I use for travel. Doesn't see to want to let me upload some of my free programs like CCleaner, InfranView, Open Office and many others...They have made it very difficult to find former included items like Notepad, Paint, etc......It is easy to see which way the wind is blowing in Redmond...

I will keep Win 7 on the computers I use daily....

We have several computers running Win XP. Heck we have two computers running Win 2000. One of the computers that just keeps running fine a SCSI 1-TB RAID that was stunning how big that was when we put on-line 15 years ago, now it is tiny.

We have just one Win 10 machine and we went with 10 only because the main software package we use on it recommended Win10 for whatever reason. I spent a lot of time trying to clear off the crap that Win 10 put on.

I now use Win10 & will probably use Win11...... if I live long enough.
Yes, switching over was a PITA. My computer use is pretty simple....when guys discuss computers , it's mostly Greek to me. It is just another addendum to life....but useful on occasion.

Sounds like Windows 10 is the last version.
