^ You guys speak way better Japanese than I do.

I'm super intense, but probably inherit that from family. I get along best with old white guys who are super conservative and from a bygone era where you meant what you said.

This thread is really about visiting Japan, sorry for the hijack. I can maybe share some Japanese food recipes or something to get it back on track.

Japan is great to visit. I've had fun and learned much every time I went there. The important part is to keep your blinders fully on.

Any gaijin who waxes poetic about how wonderful Japan is deserves whatever laughter is directed at him.

Yeah well I still think Japan is wonderful. Just like most have allowed with the general German population, its time to let Japan leave their past behind.

You have no idea what you're talking about. This has nothing to do with the past. This has to do with the government-mandated, institutionalized racism/xenophobia that permeates the entire society. Among other things.

While we're at it...if Japan is so wonderful, why is suicide the leading cause of death in men aged 20-44?

Like I said, Japan is great to visit, as long as you keep your blinders on.

no. Are you sure you have actually been there because I am thinking you are just making things up. in fact I am 100% sure you are posting made up stuff.

OK how about you give us a few examples of this government-mandated, institutionalized racism/xenophobia.... because the only way someone could leave there thinking that is if they went there with a chip on their shoulder and kept their "blinders" on the whole time.

Mr. Blue, What you are saying is completely ridiculous.

Here is what my daughter told me of her trip there:

Among the new Japanese friends that she made, she was a novelty, everyone wanted to have a picture taken with her and her group, invite them to parties etc.

One of the guys had to wear long sleeved shirts to hide his tattoos in order to get into many places

She went to some festival and wore a traditional outfit out of respect. The older Japanese women quite appreciated the effort t and helped them make adjustments.

There was quite a bit of evidence of racism and poor treatment in some places.
Having said that, the same people who outright criticized them or showed displeasure were also quick to ask them for help or to find out more about them.

Though she never felt that she would ever fit in or be accepted (she has other Canadian friends that live there for some time), she rated her experience there highly and would go again.

Yeah, I'm sure I've been there, 間抜け. Several times, and for extended periods.

Likewise I'm sure you have no idea what you're talking about.

For anyone who cares, He called me an idiot...

You lose. Please stop spreading this crap about Japan. It is not true.

You are the one who went in with a chip on your shoulder and that's why you had a bad experience. Next time you go take the blinders off there tough guy. Learn something for a change.

And I'm not going to show off by typing in Japanese because calling you an idiot in English is just as effective.

Are you going to answer my question?

So you can Google 間抜け but you can't Google "racism in Japan"?

It's very well-documented. I have experienced it personally. My wife and her family experienced it far, far more.

Keep wallowing in your ignorance.

I'm fluent. Didn't have to google it.

Tell us how you were discriminated against.

Japan is not as overtly racist as a lot of places. They are more discrete. Having said that, you might not be on equal terms if you are pushy or rude either. A polite Kuro-chan might not be shunned as much as a loud-mouthed Haku-jin.

うそつき. Admit it, you're just another loudmouth Japanophile who watches a lot of anime.

So far you've called me a liar/BSing (post 58), weird and naive (post 64), etc. Am i supposed to tell you my personal stories because you're such a nice, reasonable guy?

Am I supposed to believe that, despite copious documentation -- articles, entire academic texts, etc. -- supporting my assertions, you'll recant your position just because I tell you some of my thrilling travel stories?

I think we are done here mr. Blue. You probably went in there like a frat boy and didn't get to go to the public bath and now you are pissed. Whatever. Keep your blinders on! its obvious you have for a long time now. Stay blind forever.

Also, please type in English. Others here want to know what you are saying.

Racism exists everywhere on the planet guys. If anyone here goes to Japan please don't "wear blinders" or anything stupid like that. Go with an open mind smile a lot and enjoy yourself. Meet people make friends. Unless you act like some frat boy a hole you will be just fine.

My Swiss friend who married a Japanese citizen can tell you a multitude of stories about the very covert/overt racism directed at those that live in Japan as citizens of non Japanese decent.

Visitors/businessmen/tourists are given the shy smile approach...they know you are leaving. It is in their business interest to be of that attitude. They are not stupid. They are racist.

Visiting a place and living there for 30 plus years is a tad different.

This is a well documented subject btw.

She and her Japanese husband recently moved to Switzerland because of this never ending drip, drip, drip of insults and losing face publicly. They could do this because he finally retired from a Japanese firm.....prior to that they just had to endure.

I just went on eBay and bought under car lighting, LED flashing strobes, light bars, and lambo doors for my 914. The streets will never be the same until the cops see my stobe-o-scopic light show. Maybe I should get some lasers too.

How freakin over the top can they get?
