My house is right on the beach here in Oregon. We are taking some action right now. I don't like the photos I've seen so far.

Hawaii and the entire west coast are under a tsunami warning. Supposed to reach Hawaii at 0800 eastern time - about a half hour. Don't screw around with this one! Better safe than sorry!
This sounds just terrible, an 8.9 is HUGE... Good thing Japan has strict building codes and good construction practices or there would have been a LOT more damage and loss of life. If rhis had ever happened in one of the many locations of the world that still use predominantly unreinforced masonry construction, it would have been downright apocalyptic - and that's not even factoring in the tsunami. Radio was saying that a refinery was burning out of control this morning and a nuclear reactor had lost cooling capacity, but fortunately not containment... Let's hope this doesn't get much worse. I wouldn't go anywhere near the ocean for a few hours just in case... Well, not without the surfboard anyway (I kid! I kid!) Last edited by Porsche-O-Phile; 03-11-2011 at 03:37 AM.. |

Wow! The "end-timers" will have a field day with this! They will be screaming "the world is coming to an end" even though these horrible natural disasters occur regularly. I feel bad for those affected.

I used to live near the coast just north of where the quake struck on an air force base in Misawa. From what I've been able to find, the base didn't lose anyone and is mostly without power.
These videos are amazing, especially the videos that show the tsunami traveling inland. Nothing slows it down. In the videos you can see people driving away from the tsunami on roads. I can't even imagine how terrifying it must be to see the wave coming like that. 27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000" id="ep"> 27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=10,0,0,0"> Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

TOKYO -- Japan's top government spokesman says the country has issued a state of emergency at a nuclear power plant after its cooling system failed. There was no radiation leak.
This is bad. |

The plant has multiple back up cooling systems. I have not heard if those worked. I suspect they did. They are designed to do an automatic emergency shut down with any earthquake above a certain level. The plant will likely be shut down for years. The entire communications system is crippled in Japan.

It's not the entire country, just parts of it. Also, fortunately, even though Tokyo felt the quake it was very far from the epicenter. Had the epicenter been closer to Tokyo, the magnitude of the devastation would have been much worse.
