The toyota dealer just tried to sell my sister a transmission for 2500$

She took it in with a leak. They charged her $600 already, and put an output shaft seal on the transfer case. Messy work also, looks like my 10 year old did it, sealer everywhere , a bolt missing etc...
Looks like the input shaft seal also needs replaced .
Mis diagnosing a leak the first time, is acceptable , I understand fluid is everywhere, and it is not under pressure so it would be tough to visibly see the fluid leak out .
But trying to sell her a trans, seems dishonest to me. It is NOT leaking red trans fluid. It is clear as a bell, stinky gear oil from the transfer case . Robber Barons I tell ya.

This is happening more and more at the dealers. I know it has happened historically but it seems more and more they'd rather replace than repair.

dealer wrenches are NOT mechanics, they are parts replacers.

This (I used to work in the industry)

A dealerships makes most of their money in the service department and yes they'd rather replace the whole unit than repair what's there.

Did you know they do "recall work" while servicing your car without telling you?
I ask the manager... What happens to the people that don't go back to the dealership to get their car serviced? He didn't have an answer.

from the second you drive in, everyone you meet is on commission, once out of warranty you should never go there.

As long as the warranty is not compromised I would prefer to go to an indy shop. I have a Lexus extended warranty which I bought and they try to get me to go in at fixed times or mileage whichever comes first. So I get nailed for unnecessary oil changes and visits.

As an example of indy shop charges for a new battery in a 2002 Camry and a 2011 Lexus RX at the dealership the $$ amounts are 140 can and 310 can respectively.
The latter have to pay their big new buildings and large staff. I have a 100% trust in my indy shop guy and his 2 employees.

Cheers, Guy.

This. It baffles me why anyone would take their car to the dealership any more than 1 second after the warranty expires.

I only go to the Lexus Dealership for oil changes and tire rotation only because I get a brand new car to take overnight at no charge. Very convenient! I did have the chrome bezels around the power window switches start to peel. The car was well out of warranty and Lexus did cover it for me at no charge. I really don't have a bad thing to say about the dealership I use but I won't pay $850 dollars to have new Pads and Rotors installed when my regular garage mechanic only chaged $232.00 with upgraded set of Rotors to prevent warping.

A byproduct of what you have to work with.

Have a leaky brake cylinder on my 190SL.

The fix is a $25 kit with new seals and a hone.

They simply don't make parts any more that can be rebuilt.

Kia dealer tried this transmission up sell on my Niece and all she needed was an ATF fluid flush.
Bunch of thieving retards. The kids in general need a basic automotive maintenance class to educate themselves so they don't get ripped off.

I've had Porsche, Mazda and Renault dealers try to rip me off. They all lost my business permanently.

My wife takes her 2008 Infinity G35x back to the dealer where she bought the car for oil changes. They make an appointment and she gets the oil changed a full inspection and they wash her car in 30 minutes and all of that for $45. I really don't mind not having to do it. So far besides windshield wipers that I replaced and a set of tires and two batteries there has been no repairs or replacements.

A good friend of mine is a service department manager at a local dealer. He is always moaning about his "mechanics". They hire in, go off for company training, come back and if they are good, they end up drifting off to an independent shop where they can afford to pay them more than he is allowed to. He ends up with mostly dim wits.

besides the point: but $2500 for a tranny installed is a fair deal, no?

i figured north of $3k the norm for a dealership transmission.
