Well, 18 months later this issue rears its ugly head again. My poor neighbor Pete has sewer problems again, city gets involved, then the "non-conforming sewer department" inspector gets involved. Inspector starts trying to identify the neighbors connected to the problem sewer, I get a notice that he thinks I have a non-conforming sewer . . .

I call the sewerscope company, give them the date and address, they send me a link to my April 2016 sewerscope video on Youtube, I send link to the inspector, in 24 hours the inspector emails back agreeing I'm not a party to this problem, have a nice day. Whew!

There is another neighbor Gene who is going to get that notice, he won't be happy . . . but I happen to know that he tends to have sewage backup issues right about when my neighbor Pete does . . . they aren't even on the same street, but in 1910 they may have done weird stuff w/ sewers.

Yep, it sounds like it's his bit of sewer before it reaches the Y intersection. So his problem ONLY.

I have the same thing in my old 116 year old house in Newtown. There is a legal bit in the property titles that says something like "The neighbor's poo has the right to travel along your property in the shared pipe" So no one can cut off the neigbour's sewage. Also around here we have the right to do "repairs" so it doesn't need to be torn up and brought completely to current specifications ie our own sewage pipes. I think the big cost is in making a new connection into the main sewer, the pipe itself is the easy bit.
