Volkswagens the next to be hit with faulty air bags...

Insult to injury compared to everything going on with my mk6 13' tdi. Just received the letter in the mail for the Takata SDI drivers airbag... Of course "repair not yet available".

Time to give the other half the mk4, and let that sob sit.

Two of our cars have Takata recalls. Waiting (and waiting...) for the dealer to call.

Lots of cars had those airbags. When I bought the Element, I checked to make sure the recall work had been done.

Same story…no parts yet.
I read that Takata may not survive this...

I hope they don't. At least a few millions of units sold, and where's quality control?!

Biggest air bag recall in U.S. history gets massively bigger - CBS News

69 million airbags... 200 million in fines.
Astonishing. Makes the dirty diesel scandal a drop in the bucket.

Quality control is as follows…Don't get in an accident until further notice.

I just learned a couple days ago when at the VW dealer having my fuel filter changed on my 2011 TDI.

The big difference here between air bags and the diesel scandal is that VW deliberately cheated.

I am not worried about my air bag. This is a dry climate. I am sure VW isn't either. It will be bought back along with the rest of the car!

If they are not cheating, then they aren't trying hard enough. Here's one of my favorite quotes.

Quote:
A new car built by my company leaves somewhere traveling at 60 mph. The rear differential locks up. The car crashes and burns with everyone trapped inside. Now, should we initiate a recall? Take the number of vehicles in the field, A, multiply by the probable rate of failure, B, multiply by the average out-of-court settlement, C. A times B times C equals X. If X is less than the cost of a recall, we don't do one.

They didn't cheat, they just covered up information. There's a subtle difference. I'd say this is worse as they knew for many years these could kill people but they just swept it under the rug and kept on selling. They don't deserve to survive.

I agree. Only a 200 million dollar fine on a product that could kill you today, compared to the passive emissions of a vehicle.

Here's a a good post on the TDI forums.
Quote:
Searched all over the web and finally found the EPA test results for cars tested in each year. The document for year 2015 "Certified Vehicle Test Result Report Data (XLS)" in http://www3.epa.gov/otaq/crttst.htm shows those results. Here are some random examples (I just found 4 cars I recognized), along with the Jetta TDI:

Ford Explorer: NOx=0.01300, CO=1.67000
Mini Cooper (5 Doors): NOx=0.01550, CO=0.39000
Dodge Dart: NOx=0.02000, CO=0.85000
Jeep Cherokee: NOx=0.01300, CO=1.39000
Jetta (gas): NOx=0.0149, CO=0.3770

Jetta (diesel): NOx=0.03100, CO=0.0100

All in g/mi
To put it into comparison I worked out the numbers for my tractor. It's about 80 times the limit of the Jetta's CJAA posted numbers.

I didn't intend to steer this towards emissions.
Is there any auto manufacturer out there that is not effected by this recall?!

Age+wet+heat changes the ammonium nitrate inside.

Radio today said they are going to 'structure the replacement schedule' for those vehicles believed most critical.

My local news said to go to your dealer and request a loaner vehicle until the airbag is replaced. Like that's going to happen.

I honestly would not take a loaner if they gave it to me. With my luck I would get stuck with a Peugeot 108.

I wonder if it's wise to disable the front air bag... Shrapnel vs buck teeth!?

Got the letter in the mail for our 2010 CC. No known date when it'll be ready though. We have 3 cars that don't have the airbag issue at least. '00 Celica, '92 Volvo and '87 Mercedes.
