pushing the button for pedestrian crossing..pushing it once.
boy.
i ride my bike to work and i have bike crossing buttons and a myriad of ped crossing buttons. ours are fancy. they either say, "wait" or "beep" when you push a button. what is it with people that stand there mashing the button repeatedly? "wait, wait wait wait wait....................................." i've installed those systems. that''s like the car backing up and back over the loop detector repeatedly . i've yet to explain it to anyone..haha..dont want to get shived.. i wish i could program one to NEVER switch if you keep pushing the bottom..or program the electronic voice to say.."lay off the button you mother effer" ![]()

Ever stand in a lobby waiting on an elevator and watch 10 people re-push the already lit 'up' button?

At an elevator, when a button is pushed, their is a light that acknowledges the "up" or "down" has been requested.
The pedestrian crossing does not have any acknowledgement that the pressing of the button did anything. Human nature is to keep pressing until there is some result. |

May be a failure on the part of people who install those things to consider providing feedback to the user, like maybe a digital timer that counts down to when the light will change.

I've seen ped crossing buttons in my neck of the woods that light up with a red LED once the light is pushed.

What I've noticed is there are different responses by the signal to the button push. At some intersections, the button does nothing more than activate the "Walk" sign once the signal goes through its regular timing cycle for the green light. In other words, failure to push the button results in a green light for traffic but no "Walk" command. At these types of intersections, peds tend to continually push the button because nothing seems to be happening as they wait for the cycle to complete. At other intersections, I've witnessed the button change the cycle of the signal and the green for traffic, along with the "Walk" sign, appear sooner than the normal timing of the signal. At these intersections, peds tend to push once because they can see a result of the push within a few seconds. Regardless of the type of intersection, I often see someone push the button, step aside a bit, and another person who has witnessed the pushing steps up and pushes it himself. Sort of saying, "Hey bud, I don't trust that you pushed the button correctly." ![]()

It never hurts to be sure of these things. I never flush the toilet until I have the stall door unlatched and I'm sure the door will open. I have nightmares about the horror of being in the stall with an overflowing toilet and a stuck door.

At a recent trip to a small two story office building I needed to go to the second floor. The stairwell is locked from the first floor for security so that is not an option. The elevator is SLOW. I walked up and pushed the button which lit up. Someone else walked up, looked at the lit button and pushed it again a few dozen times. The elevator finally arrived and we both got on. The control panel was on the side I went to so the mad button pusher sees me push the only logical button, the second floor. They then say "one please." I looked at them with a confused look and said you are already on the first floor. Then they said well I mean one more floor up. I replied there is only one more floor up, no other possible choices, and that is where the elevator is going to go. After that it will be able to go back down to the first floor.

G'day!

What about the idiots who push the button and then immediately proceed across the intersection without waiting....why did they even bother to push the button in the first place - except they're on a power trip - but are too dumb to understand how the process works....

Hmmm... I thought those buttons were there just to give pedestrians something to do while the lights go through their normal cycle.
