What a cool car! Just the chrome by itself probably weighs as much as a Honda Fit

You're right. Cars were something else, back then weren't they?

Cool car. A friend told me about his British war buddy that came to visit him in 1961. The British man was stunned at the sheer size and opulence of American cars. There was simply nothing like it in all of Europe back then.

Those cars were behemoths. We had a '56 Olds. In those days - the early days of TV - we used to wait with anticipation for the outing of all the new cars. Each year was a new design and a closely guarded secret until the unveiling. I have a picture in my mind of the new 1956 Mercury convertible on a turn table, viewed on our 15 or 20 inch B&W.

Dig the land yacht, big V-8 with plenty of beans in an Olds of that vintage, pass everything but a gas station.

I used to own a 58 Olds 88. I bought it cheap and the seller said the brakes were not that good. Brakes had to be pumped to work! One time in Calgary during the winter I was going round a corner and the car decided to go straight ahead in the slippery conditions.
I got the car stopped about 8 feet from a house. Car was pretty quiet as I reversed gently backward. Dodged that bullet. Used to be young and foolish and now I am older and less foolish.... ![]() |

What a beauty!
There would be a huge benefit from a better wheel and tire package, but other than that, that is a looker! Just the right paint colors and the very definition of "slathered with chrome".

Did the car come from Cuba or is the license plate a repro?
