Devils Tower

So it's a bit weird I admit, but since seeing Close Encounters when I was a kid I always wanted to see Devils Tower. It's about a six hour drive Denver/Cherry Hills we should be able to make it in a long day.

I'm going to be driving in my 35+ Class C RV and I need suggestions where to stay. So far Good Sam hasn't been very helpful. I realize it's remote, but does anyone know of a good campground with a decent RV hookup I should be looking at?

The other issue I'm hitting is that I would like to go the last week in August which is jacking up prices to the MAX for n"Sturgis." (sp) I'll pay the inflated prices but I don't want to be lodging with a bunch of rowdy bikers.

I'm sorry, I can't help with your question, but I don't think it's weird. I'd love to see it too.

Its an amazing place. I can understand why the native americans thought it was super natural. Hard to get a sense of scale until you see it.

There were climbers on it when I was there, 1 girl 2 guys. The girl fell about 40 ft rested for about a minute then shot up that sucker! The lead guy was at the top sitting with his feet dangling over the edge... it was awesome!

ABSOLULTY do not go near it near the Sturgis Bike week.
It is one very crowded place any place .
That said yes it is worth a look along with the different roads to look at Mt Rushmore .
Go to Crazy Horse too.
It is worth your time for sure.

All stays is another good source for RV park info.
I too have heard that the area around Sturgis is TOTALLY jammed thru the period of the big week.
Some places are best avoided during their special times.

Yep that tower does look interesting! Let us know how your trip works out for you.

Perhaps you could find some forest service land, BLM OR OTHER SPACE THAT ALLOWS YOU TO CAMP IN THE BOONDOCKS NEARBY.

Cheers Richard

Thats what I did but I was on a n Electra Gluide

Didn't stay in Sturgis but a couple of days. The further you get away from it( miles) the traffic eases up a lot..

(Yea I do it every other year. Its a great ride, usually stay at Creek Side campground)
The Crazy horse museum film clip says the ALL the heads on Rushmore can be put in the horses head of Crazy Horse . That is the scale of it as to how large the monument is or will be.
I believe it, as the full size crane up on top looked like a fly next to the head.

Mentally, I have never really considered that to be a real thing. I mean, I know it is, but it's so connected to that movie that my mind equates it with a set, instead of something to go see in person.

Now, I might have to fix that.

I am told the Tower has its very own Eco system up on top.

From what I've read, Sturgis rally will be the week of Aug. 8th. Hulett, Wyo., also has an event that same week that could impact the RV areas near Devil's Tower--specifically the Tower View campground which is close to the monument and advertises that "bikers are welcome." If your trip is in late August, my guess is that you won't be impacted and you can Google the RV campgrounds close to the Tower for locations.

It certainly has gone that direction !
I think they have lost the point of the trip!

Try to go there when the aliens stop by. Used to be mid-August, but they changed it to mid-September for some reason.

Interesting. I also became sorta obsessed with this place, after seeing the movie as a kid (I am 47). One day I'll get to see it in the flesh...
