A Good Samaritan who stopped at the scene of a California car accident and helped free a trapped family was slapped with a $143 bill for his heroics!

Derrick Deanda pulled up right as an SUV went into a terrifying roll-over back in September 2015. “There was a guy standing inside the van — because it was on its side — holding a 2-year-old infant,” he recalled of the scary scene.

The quick-thinking hero smashed a window to help the frantic father and his three kids before paramedics arrived, suffering a cut in the process. Incredibly, Derrick soon received a bill from the Cosumnes Community Services District in Elk Grove, Calif., for a “first-responder fee!”

They're going to make it right but it should have never gotten this far. I think the medical industry throws these kinds of charges out there hoping that the person will just pay it. If the news goes public then they back peddle and say "oh that was a mistake".

It's not clear from the article, but I assume the $143 was because they treated his cut at the scene. I don't see a problem with someone paying for that, but it sure shouldn't be the guy who helped those people.

The not-so-new trick is to "bundle" all the charges so there is no stupid stuff itemization---it just gets buried in the charge and is paid.
