We've got an issue forming, and I don't know what to do.

We have been adopted by a few local strays, one of which we've fixed and everything, she lives in our yard pretty much exclusively, sits on our laps, etc.

We're moving. Like, a mile away.

Do we take the one particularly connected stray? Do we take them all (one or two others, and 2 kittens)? Not take any? The others travel the block a bit more, they'll probably be fine without us, but even they come running down the street for dinner when one of us comes home from work.

Has anyone transported a stray to a new house and got it to stay? We don't want to bring her along only to have her immediately run away trying to find her old home, but we also can't assume that whatever renter moves in will take care of any of them.

As a kid in first grade, I adopted a cat from a junk yard (or maybe I should say it adopted me). It was about as wild as a cat could be. When we moved not too long afterwards, on the last load moving, we put the cat in the car. It made itself right at home in the new place.

Pazuzu:

Take them all with you. You will regret it later on if you don't. Keep them indoors for a few days or so to get them used to the new place.

Yup, take them! They will be happy with home food water and shelter

I should be more clear, we have the two indoor cats which of course are coming, these others are all purely outdoor feral cats, which had come to accept us and expect our food. Levels of domestication vary from "eat our food" to "sit in our lap", but none are domestic.
They'll survive without us I'm sure. I'm more concerned about bringing one of them to a new ecosystem, with new dangers, new yards to learn, new fences to deal with and different dogs, etc.

Figure out how to take them with you and make them comfortable inside somewhere a few days-they will be your friends forever.

Good luck with that, more than likely the feral s will migrate back to the old local. We tried the same years ago with a stray male took him with us when we moved about a few blocks away, lasted one day, back to his familiar turf.

That's what I'm afraid of, bring her out somewhere else and having her then try to get back "home". It's only a mile as the crow flies, but there is one big street, and several small streets...and people who shoot cats, people who burn cats, people who attack cats...

At least her ear is nicked, but I expect 95% of the population doesn't know what that means.

One of our neighbors across-the-street was evicted a few months ago; she had 3 cats and for some reason left one of them. He's somewhat adopted us, but still spends time at his old house, too.

I'll admit there was a time when I didn't. I saw she had a bite out of her ear, but I assumed it was due to misadventure. I took her down to get fixed and I got a call later that day "Um, you know she's already spayed, right?" The vet gets part of the blame - they should have noticed and would know better.

I think they changed things, now they take a good 1/2+ inch off the tip of the ear, it's very apparent. Our indoor rescue is like that, and the outdoor kitty we had fixed is like that. I don't know that I would notice the old v shaped nick on some long haired cats...
