Keeping your word!
Selling my car. Put it on C/L this morning. Within 2 hours I had a guy tell me he wants to see it but can't get here till 7:30 pm. I said that's fine I'm in no hurry. Meanwhile I get 3 or 4 other e-mails from other potential buyers. This young guy just came over went all threw the car knowing that the first guy that emailed me has first crack at it. He tried everything to get me to sell it to him, even tried to offer a little more to just sell it to him. Told him I'm keeping my word and if the other guy dosnt want it, you can have it. Wanted me to call the guy and pressure him? This kid just went on and on for 5 min. What the hell? Kid, there's still people out their with common decency!! Lol. Rant

P.S. 87 911 Targa
96k $28k Fair price? |
If it were me, I'd owe nothing to the guy who can't make it till 7:30 PM. I guess I'm not the man that you are :D
Where do you draw the line? Tonight? Tomorrow? Next week? Cash talks, BS walks in my book. |
I am a man of my word too, Henry, but this one is gonna to bite you in the ass this evening. He aint gonna show.

"Paypal me a $100 non refundable deposit and I'll have the car for you at 730 otherwise take your chances"
|
Don't need to sell it, it is what it is. I would be pissed off if someone did it to me.

A friend with a rental house has an interesting process when interviewing prospective tenants. He sets an "open house" date and time - one time only. People show up, fill out the paperwork, and interview. He notifies the winner the next day. If they wash out he goes to next on the list.
Similar model for selling a car - Set a time, date and place. Everyone comes, looks it over, and makes a written offer. Sealed bid - silent auction style. Whoever makes the best offer gets the call the next day. If they wash, next on the list. To weed out the sillies - take a refundable deposit with each offer. |

IMO, you did the right thing. If the 7:30 dude flakes, call the kid.
|
What happens if the guy at 7:30 offers you asking price (since the other guy offered more to sell it earlier). Are you a man of your word and sell it at asking price and accept less money? Just curious? Or do you tell the 7:30 guy you've been offered more? If so, are you still a man of your word?

Craigslist deals? First guy to put a pile of money in my hand takes the merchandise.
|
If you've got folks begging you for the car, then you've priced it too low, but if you're happy with the price, and they are happy with the price, then the price is just fine.
I'd have told the 7:30 guy, if it's still available at 7:30, then you're welcome to it. On nothing more than the guy's word that he'll show, I'd not putting much weight behind that. If I say I'm going to show, I show, but I assume no one else has the same integrity. Too many people flake out these days. |
F that. First guy at my door with cash on the barrel head leaves with the goods.
WAY too many flakes on craigslist to hold a car for someone. Like id10t said, show me the money and I'll hold the car. |

Well the moment you told the first guy: "sure I'll wait until 7:30", you're right- you were honor bound to respect that.
I think the point everyone is making is that for the next time, with all the flakes on on CL, it's best to say first guy with $$ who shows up gets it. |
I think you did the right thing and it was very nice of you to give the first guy a chance. I am sure it will come back to you someday.

Since you told the guy you'd wait, now you need to wait, but I would not have told him that in the first place. |
You are doing the right thing by honoring your word. If the second guy really wants it that bad and has the ability to purchase, he will be back if the other guy flakes. There are not that many 911's on the market that you would lose the sale by making them wait a day- I wouldn't have held it for someone for more than that unless they supplied earnest money.
