On my resume back there somewhere there is an old time wood boat builder...I am sure Zeke would do a great job .
Under the hallucination of quarter-sawn, steam-bent, tortured ply, I will make an earnest endeavor.
However, i for sure am looking for a great floor plan.
The split level is an asset and a complication.

masraum 06-02-2021 04:17 AM

Sweet, so that's the one that you bought and that ~1500 mile route is going to be your maiden voyage?

Well you know you can't bend plywood so you are going to bend veneer over a buck and stack your layers. You don't have to steam them, just wet them and assemble with poly glue. I would suggest bending only the part that needs to be coved. Use trim to cover a butt joint where any cove meets straight panels.

3 ply should be more than enough. There is some stuff called bending ply but IDK if it's available in oak much lass quarter sawn.

Kerf bending is another trick. If you have any compound curves, I'd like to see how you go about that.

Thanks, now I'm sucked up in those videos.

"Tortured" plywood as you know, -they call it.

It can be done to some extent....
I don't think I will be using too much of it, as it is such a small area.
Perhaps some exotics might be nice?
I am not much for plastics as on countertops -maybe Purple Heart?
IDK....
Floor plan ideas are welcomed!
Keep in mind there are about 4 stair steps up to the next floor about 1/3 the way dwn the bus.

Post the dimensions? This would be a fun thing to group-noodle on.

Just found this thread.

Friend just bought a Wanderlodge. Pretty cool setup.

We are also working to revive a 57 Greyhound conversion. Has a 671 that hasn't run in 10 years. We pulled a few stuck injectors and have fixed the governor and emergency cutoff (blockoff). Hope to fire up soon. At least the bus has full set of manuals.

Yes, the Bus Grease Monkey is a great watch. You can really learn quite a bit watching and absorbing.

Can’t be of much help here, but can give a bit of info on the Purpleheart. It will quickly turn to a brown/burgundy with sun exposure. On the plus side, it is pretty rot resistant; saw a show about an old sailing ship that had, if memory serves a Purpleheart keel?

Nice bus, thanks for sharing the journey
.

It would be great to get some ideas!

It was built under the old DOT law and they had a fight about that with the feds because of the length.

I think it is a safe bet to allow about 5 feet in the front area for the driver and entryway.

Outside dimensions - the inside will be slightly different as in smaller
Total Length: 40 feet (12.19 m) Bumper to bumper
Width: 96 inches (2,438 mm)
Height: 134 inches (3,404 mm)

It is all high enough to walk around on, either level.

I'd recommend avoiding the 11'8" bridge.

(technically, I don't think it exists any more)

Hmm, 600hp and probably 1000lbft of torque. Do you think it would fit in my boxster? :D

jpnovak 06-02-2021 01:49 PM

Looks like a mid-engine Dodge.

Is that CAT?

Yes, long term on the 57 is to swap drivetrains. but first, It has to move from its current resting location. Lots of options once it is in an accessible area.

That's a really cool Scenicruiser!!! My Dad had a bus tour/charter business back in the 80's and two of the buses were of the "Buffalo" variety with the windows up above the windshield!!! He always had a Love for the Scenicruiser though. I remember a man in Panama City, Fl that had one that he had customized.

That thing is pretty cool!

DonDavis 06-26-2021 06:34 AM

I must've been sleeping or something, I looked over this thread and can't see where the acquisition of the bus took place. Or which exact model/year you picked up, AB.

Plus, where are the pics?

C'mon man. Let us see!

Scott Douglas 06-26-2021 09:46 AM

Wow, is that your rig?
I bet it doesn't even notice the car is there or not.

Scott Douglas 06-26-2021 10:05 AM

That engine is HUGE!
Do you have a tractor to help move it around on the stand?

His post that he got one wasn't super clear, and now I can't even find it. It's one that he talked about looking at farther back. Yes, I don't think there have been any pics except the original post about looking at one for sale or something like that.

He's more circumspect than many of us about putting himself out there, but that's not a bad thing at all. It's not like this is a private forum.

pete3799 06-26-2021 05:03 PM

Odd...he posted a few pictures of it yesterday and now they're gone.

daepp 06-29-2021 09:40 AM

My email notification provides a link to the photos of the new bus. And it's super nice. I would post if he's having a problem, but if he pulled them down for privacy issues I wouldn't want to interfere.

Evans, Marv 09-17-2021 08:21 AM

Wow! That's a great looking bus. I hope the deal went/goes through for you. The possibilities are exciting.

jyl 09-17-2021 08:58 AM

Excited! Post more when its yours!

speeder 09-17-2021 10:03 AM

Super cool bus but not exactly something that you can park just anywhere.

Racerbvd 09-17-2021 10:13 AM

When I was in Georgia last weekend for a track event, I saw a project bus, it was either being resigned along the bottom or raised. As about 2 feet at the bottom was only skeleton all the way around.

herr_oberst 09-17-2021 11:02 AM

I'm surprised at the number of these built. I'd never given it any thought until now, but 1001 seems kind of low....considering how ubiquitous they were.

Evans, Marv 09-17-2021 02:50 PM

I wonder if there is a disk brake conversion that would fit it. Oh no !!!! The "while you're in there" sindrome strikes again.

I proly will not do that much racing with it anyway?
LOL

Did you update the interior/convert to motorhome?

ficke 10-27-2021 08:35 AM

I have basically the same gen set in my 67 Crown bus conversion, mine is the same power 10 kw, but uses a Kubota powered diesel. The Perkins is a great engine and I have not heard anything bad about it.
10 kw is plenty of power to do everything you listed and more.
I use my main fuel tank to fuel the genset , and the truck batteries for starting power of it, I also use the radiator of the bus for cooling the genset.
The only real complaint I have, and it is a real one, is how loud it is and the vibration it makes.
My Genset is older (1998) and I did not do a lot in the way of isolation insulation stuff.

ficke 10-27-2021 08:48 AM

It was really hard to figure away to fit and access/service a radiator for the gen set and using the truck one sure removed all those issues. Over 108degrees and running both A/C's and pulling a hill I have had temp issues, but below 105 or on flat ground or slight hills no issues at all. I did have to install a electric fan to pull air through the main rad. when parked and running the gen set.

Nice!
Here is my convoy from August 2021 road trip, to Modoc California, yellow stone, etc. and a picture of the inside from that trip.
I want a turbo real bad for my NA 220 Cummins.
What is your? 8V71? Turbo?

Ha! I remember seeing that bus on the way to Roebling Road a couple months ago. It was on the main drag as you headed towards the track.

Scott Douglas 06-29-2022 08:17 AM

That's pretty cool. Can you post a picture of the 'flex' connection of the radiator? Is it just a long rubber hose or ?
Just curious how they did that.

Scott Douglas 06-29-2022 10:42 AM

Thanks!
Those shutters are something else.
Does the fan push air out or drag it in?
