Things do change and this today's update
Elissa is currently in the hospital for the past week, suffering from an apical pneumothorax on her right lung. She had a Cyst in her lung that burst unexpectedly due to the long term illness with Cystic Fibrosis. She was rushed by ambulance to JPS where they placed an emergent chest tube to allow the lung to expand. Then she was transported to UTSW where her doctors are located for pulmonary care and transplant team. She was only in ICU for 24 hours. She received an additional smaller tube at the top portion of her lung on Friday. Currently neither tube has allowed for full expansion of her lung. Doctors have proposed options. Tomorrow she will be receiving a one way valve in her lung through a bronchoscopy with full sedation. If this doesn't fix the full problem, then they will use betadine to inflame the lung tissue to adhere to the wall of the pleura space called pleurodesis The problem with the latter technique is that scraping from the adhesions during transplantation of yr new lung may cause excessive bleeding and complications. Currently she is still #6 on blood type O donor list. The doctors are trying to increase her LAS score to be higher for moving her up on the list. She is stable and is in a regular room 836. This is a very delicate time in her life. There is no prediction when she will get new lungs and the outcome of these procedures. Prayers, thoughts, cards, are all appreciated.
