Looking at 2008 Cayman S. Any known issues?

Friend is looking at a 2008 Porsche Cayman S.
19,000 miles
Tiptonic S.
Has seen the track a few times- PCA DE's.
Dealer cared for with records- nothing exciting.
PPI pending.
Asking $42000, which I think is crazy high. But I am staying out of the pricing wars.
I know my way around the Carrera's, but was asked for guidance here.
Any known issues or weaknesses with this year?
I just want to give him good info.

Very reliable. Only serious issue (few cars but expensive to fix) is bore scoring.

That price is way high. Planet 9 is a good Cayman forum.

This is not entirely true. This generation also suffers from:

D-Chunking
Intermediate Shaft Bearing Failure
Random cylinder 1 misfires
Premature issues around post-cat O2 sensor failure (slow response, voltage below thresh-hold - these are software-related).

At least, these are what I have seen.

Oh yeah, I'm aware there are more problems with the Cayman. The Bore scoring seems to be the most talked about with the Cayman S through 2008.

$42k is nuts for a Cayman unless you are in a part of the world with weird costs or something.

the 2008 is still technically something that could have an IMS issue, although much reduced from earlier cars. Brando has mentioned some other issues. I've heard of the D-chunk.

Well, the one other problem with the car is the transmission. It's a tiptronic.

I paid less than that for my '08 Boxster S which was Certified Pre-Owned with a 2 year warranty and a special edition (that included several nice options as standard and the optional removeable hardtop.

I think this is about 10000 over realistic price- something around 30K.
Your thoughts on pricing?
This car will be used as a daily driver by a non car person , but they are allowed to smile too.

IMS not really an issue in `08. Not heard much about D chunking. Only known issue in Cayman S is way overpriced.

Yeah, for $42k, I believe you can pickup up a later model Cayman or Boxster S or a slightly more used 911.

Agreed, based on condition and location, probably $22-32k, but the $32k would be for a car in perfect condition or with some really great options.

Why don't you just buy mine for $8500, do a 3.8 DFI swap and still come out ahead? Sell the 3.4 in it as a core to a shop or use it for a core charge.

for $42K, you can get into a 2013 non-S. PDK is far better than Tip and the DFI engines don't show the catastrophic failures of the pre 2009s.

I would call that car a high-20s car all day long.

I am selling my beloved 2006 Porsche Cayman S for $15,500.

Black exterior, black interior. Manual 6-speed. New tires (<1 year old), both new catalytic converters (<1 year old), brand new battery (replaced in late July). Car has 150K miles but has been very well-maintained.

I am selling this because I'm moving out of California to a city where car ownership is a liability. This is the most responsive and most reliable Porsche that I have ever owned.

At that price (or less) you should buy an 09+ with a worry free motor....
That price is ridiculous, and frankly if you're looking at that range of year-prices, you should stretch to 09 for the new IMS free engine. The only reason to buy an 05-08 at the current point in time (no good IMS solution) is that you are getting an absolute steal - then the stats make sense because it is a low % of failure but an expensive one. I'd also recommend a stick, that's a great gearbox !!
