It's only 60 if you are a racist bigot. The number 3 is in a protected class.

Written like that, without any () anywhere, it is supposed to be done like: 56 - (24 ÷ 3) +12 = But yes, if it was written as 56 - 24 3 + 12 Then I believe that is kind of understood to be (56 - 24) ÷ (3 + 12) = ?

math solution
Order of operation should be multiplication, division, addition and then subtraction.
56-24/3+12 divide 24 by3 equals 8. Add 8 + 12 to get 20. Subtract 20 from 56 leaves 36!

first rule is left to right multiplication and division have the same hierarchical position, so you do them in order from the left to the right addition and subtraction have the same hierarchical position, so you do then is order left to right 56 - 28 ÷ 3 + 12 56 - 8 + 12 48 + 12 60 if the teacher wanted any other result parenthesis would be needed to be explicitly placed

But you're not adding 8+12 to get twenty. You're adding -8 + 12 to get 4.

I'm in with the others who state the correct answer of 60 for the problem written in the original post.
I fought similar issues when my son was in school. We went through this 5 times during his elementary and middle school years here in Oregon - he was brandished as "disruptive" and "argumentative" each time for correcting the teacher in class. This same topic came up during a public Parent Advisory Council meeting and was raised by another parent. I threw the standard problem of "1 + 2 X 3 = ?" on the board. All faculty present answered "9". All professionals in the audience answered "7" correctly. Elementary (and some middle school teachers) for some reason were rationalizing that PEMDAS doesn't apply until you take an algebra course... |

My favorite "math search engine" for reference:

I was a never a big fan of the maths.
![]() Sixty-Three Years of Math 1957-2020 In America: The evolution in teaching math since the 1950’s 1. Teaching Math in 1950s A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price. What is his profit? 2. Teaching Math in 1960s A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price, or $80. What is his profit? 3. Teaching Math in 1970s A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is $80. Did he make a profit? 4. Teaching Math in 1980s A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is $80 and his profit is $20. Your assignment: Underline the number 20. 5. Teaching Math in 1990s A logger cuts down a beautiful forest because he is selfish and inconsiderate and cares nothing for the habitat of animals or the preservation of our woodlands. He does this so he can make a profit of $20. What do you think of this way of making a living? Topic for class participation after answering the question: How did the birds and squirrels feel as the logger cut down their homes? (There are no wrong answers, and if you feel like crying, it's ok.) 6. Teaching Math in 2000s If you have special needs or just feel you need assistance because of race, color, religion, sex, age, childhood memories, criminal background, then don't answer and the correct answer will be provided for you. There are no wrong answers. 7. Teaching Math in 2020 Un hachero vende una carrtada de maderapara 100 pesos. El costo de la producciones es 80 pesos. This stuff is half of my facebook feed nowadays. Who the hell cares ? Why don't people use parenthesis anymore ? ;-) I love it when they are billed as tests of intelligence, where they are simply a test of how much you remember precedence rules when people are too sloppy to use parens...

we sent out daughter to private school. we adopted a 12 yr old boy. wanted to send him to same school but because of his background he would not have made it. (right now hoping he will make it out of public school). he is now in 11th grade. we have been able to compare what public school requires and what private school requires, what a shame what our public schools have degraded to.

this teaches you math rules......but not if the teacher cant get it right. in real life the equation is not written out for you so even with a calculator you have to know that you multiply/divide before + or - .
