Not if it's written 56 - 24 ÷ 3 + 12 = ? which is how the OP said it was written.

Written like that, without any () anywhere, it is supposed to be done like:

56 - (24 ÷ 3) +12 =

But yes, if it was written as

56 - 24
3 + 12

Then I believe that is kind of understood to be (56 - 24) ÷ (3 + 12) = ?

56-24/3+12 divide 24 by3 equals 8. Add 8 + 12 to get 20. Subtract 20 from 56 leaves 36!

But you're not adding 8+12 to get twenty. You're adding -8 + 12 to get 4.

I'm in with the others who state the correct answer of 60 for the problem written in the original post.

I fought similar issues when my son was in school. We went through this 5 times during his elementary and middle school years here in Oregon - he was brandished as "disruptive" and "argumentative" each time for correcting the teacher in class.

This same topic came up during a public Parent Advisory Council meeting and was raised by another parent. I threw the standard problem of "1 + 2 X 3 = ?" on the board. All faculty present answered "9". All professionals in the audience answered "7" correctly. Elementary (and some middle school teachers) for some reason were rationalizing that PEMDAS doesn't apply until you take an algebra course...

Meh, there is only multiplication and addition. division is multiplication and subtraction is just addition of a negative.

we sent out daughter to private school.
we adopted a 12 yr old boy. wanted to send him to same school but because of his background he would not have made it. (right now hoping he will make it out of public school).
he is now in 11th grade. we have been able to compare what public school requires and what private school requires,
what a shame what our public schools have degraded to.

if you are going to write out a math equation you have to 1: know the math rules to know that you NEED parentheses and 2: you have to know where to PUT the ().
this teaches you math rules......but not if the teacher cant get it right.
in real life the equation is not written out for you so even with a calculator you have to know that you multiply/divide before + or - .
